Title: Search underway near Upper Hutt for overdue motorcyclist

An extensive Police search is underway in the Akatarawa Forest Park area for a missing Lower Hutt man, who failed to return home from a motorbike ride yesterday afternoon.

Wellington Police District Operations Manager Inspector Mike Wright says Police were alerted about 7-30pm last night, after the 35 year-old failed to return home at the expected time.

“Police Search and Rescue staff have been out searching overnight and we have now ramped up the search. We’re being assisted by Greater Wellington Regional Council parks staff and Upper Hutt Community Rescue members.”

“We’re focusing on a large area in and around the Akatarawa Forest Park area. A helicopter has done an overhead search earlier this morning, however we haven’t been able to locate this man.”

Inspector Wright says there were a number of keen trampers, trailbike riders and four wheel drive enthusiasts in the area yesterday, given the fine weather and someone may have seen this man on their journey.

“He’s described as a Caucasian of average height and solid build, dressed in black clothing, riding a green Kawasaki KLX 400R motorbike, similar to the one below. We’re urging anyone who may have seen him to contact Police immediately on either (04) 381 2000 or on the free phone Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.”

Title: Missing motorcyclist found safe and well in Akatarawa Forest Park

Wellington Land Search and Rescue (SAR) personnel have located the missing 35 year-old motorcyclist, reported missing yesterday afternoon.

Sergeant Jo Holden, head of Wellington SAR says the Lower Hutt man was found safe and well about 6-15pm tonight, in an area of Akatarawa Forest Park known as the Devil's Staircase.

"He has told us that he flooded his bike yesterday afternoon. He tried to get his bike going again before deciding to stay put for the night. He heard the Westpac Rescue helicopter overhead this morning, searching for him."

Sergeant Holden says the man is currently being escorted out of the Park by vehicle and will be taken back to the operations base in Upper Hutt.

"It's always a great result to locate a missing person alive and well and Police would like to thank the Land SAR volunteers, Greater Wellington Regional Council staff, rural fire and Upper Hutt Community Rescue staff for their assistance."

Am I being picky or does it seem wrong to others that it took them all day to find a motorcyclist on what is a common track for motorcyclists to be riding on :? :?

Nup picky

my maths isnt the best but at rough guess the Aka forest is about 300 square kilometres (20kmx15km) which is 300,000,000 square metres and a joker on his bike takes up aprox 2 square metres so that makes a pretty big search area, on top of that chances are nobody actually knew where he was going to ride and he probably only had a rough idea of where he was going anyway.... theres a lot of ground to cover just sweeping the tracks

i kinda have to agree with you a little there skid .. the staircase is a very well known place that i'd have to say atleast 99% of riders would go either up or down atleast once during the day!

id have to say it would have been on the list of tracks to send a quad or atleast a bike through to search even before the chopper was called .

but thats my opinion .

all in all he was found and was ok that's all that really matters

( more to the point why was he riding out there alone ! silly boy should know better )
