urgent!! Clutch problems

Post by lincooln »

Hi all, Today as I was leaving my boss's I realised the clutch seemed to be weird, couldn't change smooth at all. then realised that 3/4 of the pedal travel was free, and was only getting worse. Only got 2km up the road to the gas station and couldnt disengage clutch to get into gear.

Vehicle is a 93 Vitara, G16a, carb

Thing is I think it is the cable that has gone. would that be right? The thrust bearing has been making noise for the last almost a year. so could that also be it? when i was driving it it wasn't slipping, but when I pushed it at the garage I did smell clutch. also when trying to depress clutch and engine is idling it almost stalls.

any help would be good,

Cheers

Two words..........Engine (or Gearbox) Out!!!

Sounds like thrust bearing or cable is fraying inside and jamming up the whole shootin' match.
Bummer Dude :!: :!:
Just as you got Mazda going too.

Look where the cable goes through the firewall , they have a habbit of cracking and the cable pulls through the firewall a bit . This would give you a slack pedal .

x2 the firewall thing. I've seen them tear the firewall. Theres a special bolt in there too that can bend also. A lot easier to check all this stuff before taking the gearbox out

Download a service manual. Heaps on the net for free. Its easy as. Under the truck you have to take it off the clutch lever, I think there's a bracket holding the cable down there on the side of the engine too so undo that and then everything else is up at the firewall end of things. Need to remove the two bolts on the firewall holding the cable - above the master cylinder. I think it just unhooks of the pedal itself but would have to check that.
Havn't done it for a while but I think thats about it. Theres the usual requirement for little asian hands but thats a given

Correct, once it's unbolted at the firewall and gearbox end it just unclips from the pedal. Make sure you use the retainer clip in the engine bay when re-installing it, otherwise it will contact the fanbelt or alternator and rapidly become worn through, necessitating yet another new cable! (First-hand experience  )

Have you had a chance to look at it yet? I had a similar problem in two escudo's i had. For me it was the bolt that the clutch and brake pedal pivots on. There is no support on the outside and they have a habbit of bending. I replaced mine with a High Tensile bolt 10X180 from memory cut to length.

Yea I had a looked at it. The release bearing must have collapsed, as I replaced cable just in case then after turning the zuk around in the driveway smoke was pouring from the gearbox. i haven't taken it out but will do this weekend hopefully.

The release bearing was making noise for nearly a year so its a miracle it lasted that long anyway. However it didn't make any noise when i put the new cable in, so thats not a good thing. and my old man said it was making a different noise to normal a couple of weeks ago. so its no surprise.

also does any one know any other place that sells Heavy duty clutch kits, other than BNT? one from BnT will cost $415+gst, So just wondering if there is anyone else out there selling them?

Cheers

Give the guys at BNT a hard time (be cheeky but polite) and ask for trade price. If you dont ask ya dont get. Also mention all the great publicity they will get on here when you sing their praises. Hell even if they only drop 20-30 bucks its better then nothing.

The brake and clutch place on Archers (not sure if they are still there) are okay for prices too (well they were a while ago  ).
