Thought the Nissan gurus are best to help me with this one.
Through a family members contacts I have the oppurtunity to purchase a 1999 Nissan patrol 4.2 diesel TI Auto. Have been browsing trademe and the like and these really seem to hold their value well.
I am going out to view it this afternoon so want to have bit of a heads up on what to look for.
It has only had 2 owners, 400,000kms on the clock but has recently had the engine and gearbox completely overhauled.
I would like to get it as a work wagon being a builder, and also to make a great tow vehicle to drag around our trailer toy, with seating to start a family next year.
So what I'm asking is what are the pros/cons?
What should I be looking for?
Not sure if its turbo, if not whats involved in putting a turbo on it?
Online valuations from carjam/turners adjusting for odometer reading put it at about 13-16k, does that sound right?
So at about 5k I would be stupid to say no.
Should I purchase a 1999 Nissan patrol??

You would be mad to turn it down for that price
Also depending on what was done to the motor and box you are probably looking at $10K or so of work that has been done there. If you service it on a regular basis you will get another 500,000K's out of it, hey in fact you may not need to rebuild again until it ticks over 1,000,000km!

If you don't take it, let me know and I'll buy it!

I'm keen as, the CFO (chief financial officer) keeps putting her 2c in, but ... but ... but ... will just have to wait and see what condition its in. Now getting back to the reason for this post, what do I need to pay close attention to with these vehicles, don't want to buy cheap and end up spending a fortune next month.

Unlikely to have rust issues in this age truck unless it has been used to launch a boat in salt water or is continually in salty environment. Check all receipts for work done - to rebuild the auto would have cost a packet. If it drives good, changes gear nice, doesn't make strange noises and the receipts check out you can't lose - If you don't like it you would most likely sell it for more than you paid. keep it serviced, don't overheat it and you'll be sweet.

That's a steal! the TI version is usually the flash model, turbo, leather, cruise control etc. If you want to know everything to look for, look here

ok been to have a look, bloody nice to drive, few cosmetic faults, and only been driven by 1 agricultural rep covering the whole south island since the company purchased it at 45,000kms. Yes very flash with all the extras. very nice but turns out my uncle was way out on price tho. Just storing it for a company who are looking to upgrade it, hence contacting me. They would be after trade in value, so more like 12k we reckon, but wont know for a few weeks yet what they want to do. The turbo was gone, oil coming from around intakes, (possibly just seals and perhaps they only did the block and not everything else? receipts are at office in north island so cant confirm what work was done at this stage) and had no intercooler. Other than that with 384,000kms on it, didnt smoke and changed flawlessly. Now its just wait and see.
