Odlins Rd washout

Post by Snorkel88 »

Odlins Rd has a washout 3.5km after top carpark. The road is only one meter wide, we were unable to get past. We were there on Sunday 2nd of November.

Thanks for the heads up. Do you think it's something that can be fixed by hand (a few hands that is), or is it a heavy machinery job?

Was told by the ccvc guys that they are arranging a digger to go in there( this was at our club meeting last month). The washout occured about 3 weeks ago. I,m sure they said they felled some trees to stop anyone attempting it as it was extremley dangerous. Would be great if someone could get some pics up of the slip

Its a heavy machinery job, probably would need to build a retaining wall, or get a mesh wire cube and fill with rocks to support the edge of road, there are no trees across road stopping access. Also about 1km before top carpark both sides of the road has washed out, you can just get a vehicle through, but a bit dicey

This is a picture of the washout before the summit on Odlins Road.

This was taken on the 25th October. We also encountered a big slip a few km's down the hill on the way to the hut. It was not possible to get past this slip.

Yes, early last month.

It looks the a bit worse than the picture posted by graemec but its not really that bad "touch wood", it could possibly wash away at any second but you could also be hit by a bus, at home in front of your pc, etc

I wouldnt go past the top "carpark" [turning bay] in anything bigger than a sj or quad as the track is not maintained and few turning points for quads sized wagons, and lots of wash outs = a logn way to back up.

Went a fair way down in my surf, its not to bad.

Update @ 20 June

Washout prior to top carpark now driveable, we got a hilux and safari through with marginal room to spare.
On the descent to the hut there is a very tight corner that has washed out - apparently a hilux took a drop there a few mths back.
Our suzi & swb safari went through ok, but it was real touch and go with the hilux, ended up stropping the rear to a tree to pull the back around.

Further down the 2 washouts are a little rough, had to get a couple of the trucks winched out in places.....
We crossed river past hut and then turned back...

Good afternoon in the snow though :) Just a pity about that tree that jumped out and smacked my vitara.
Now after a front bumper and grill - Anyone???

Back through over the weekend.
Would not suggest taking any longwheel base vehicles down the other side.

Its getting a little tight in places.

Cops were at the top with the search and rescue, and a helicopter down by the hut.

All good fun!
