Re: warn high mount proplem 8274
When did you last strip it? Sounds to me like the cam on the brake shaft is seized and therefore not pulling the brake together.
There are a acouple of good threads online about stripping and rebuilding them (just cant find a link at the moment as I'm not infront of my own computer.) Google Warn 8274 rebuild.

Re: warn high mount proplem 8274
have found the promlem .the winch bar has had a knock at some stage , was not letting it lock in when not under much load . As soon as alot off load came on it ,it started to work fine .
Re: warn high mount proplem 8274
Sounds doggy. I'd be stripped the brake assembly down, giving it a good clear and putting it back together.

Sounds like it has had water inside the gearbox. When you get it back I'd suggest fitting a drain bung and a filler to it. Al I do it use a 10mm bolt (and cut it short) ie drill and tap a 10mm hole top and bottom.
Then it is really easy to drain the oil and since they only take about 200ml you find you do it all the time. Most guys racing just use engine oil. Factory spec is 6oz of non-detergent 30w oil but the reality is normal engine oil works sweet. I've been doing that for years with no issues. I also never worried about the main seal leaking as I just filled it up all the time and you then knew you had oil and there was no water in it.
