Queenstown the last few weeks

Post by conads »

hey all, been out last few weekends while waitin for it to snow again...
into skippers last fri, camped out - chains on the way out front wheels. only got the AT's on that came with truck when i brought it...
 hahah not at all appropiate this day... greasy clay on the goat track in, super wet and slippery!!!, tapped truck against a wall at one point due to it being the better option than the drop on the otherside!! (just crawling so no damage)
ice and snow in every bitta shade, rained about 3hours that night . Image

saturday just been, picked up a set of ice breakers on the fri so now had two sets of chains!
went in from fairlight with the intention of summiting eyre peak and riding down
took the track as far as it went , finished about 700m
ice and plenty of snow right through valley and river, not much on eyre peak itself that was worth getting to
did a stretch in the river bed.
wouldnt go again without two sets of chains, or decent MT's and diff lockers.. all round track is mint condtion, few iced over puddles , nothing to drastic rutt and washout wise

sunday went up coal pit road and over the top down into doolans creek... had the plan of taking the ridge to ben cruachan locked gate at the saddle, same as down at the first ford

some parts of the road solid ice, some snow ruts, some severly washed out! 2 sets of chains from saddle down to creek, disconnected sway bar at bottom  tilting on two wheels always gives u that want for a little more travel :D
kept chains on all the way out, warmed up in the arvo - super slippery all the way down to first gate....
any 4wd would have got to the ruins no drama., anything past that was a different story!

solo all trips vehicle wise, only had a disposable on the eyre mission so pics are to come ther still...
on a side note if anyone has a camera lying round they want to sell??

Nice to hear a report of someone out and about doing a little exploring. I want to come down there sometime for a week or so and do some exploring myself, hopefully around Xmas time.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

The road into skippers looks like its been pretty busy going on the numbers of 4x4 hanging around the turn off! Although there's a possibility they're just tourists in rentals going to the lookout

With permission, you can go right through to the Nevis Valley (you come out at The Crossing) from Doolans Creek.
