Has anyone installed a lockright kit themselves ?
Has anyone installed a lockright kit themselves ?
I intend to get one of the ones on TM for around the $500 mark this week, just wanting to know if anyone has done the installation themselves and how they found it. Are the instructions fairly good ? Thanks

Re: Has anyone installed a lockright kit themselves ?
Installed lockrite's in my 413 many years ago , if the diff's are in good condition the instructions are good . They work on putting the carrier back in the position it was when it came out , so if it was ok to start with it will be fine after etc . If its not set up when you pull in out you may be better off setting it up again . Should go and see if the instructions are out in the shed .

Thanks Chris, Would appreciate any advice, I'm pretty mechanically capable and do have some dial indicators etc. around the place here. Is the backlash of the diff the measure of "goodness" ?

Yes, backlash is what you'll be looking at when reinstalling the carrier. Check for play in the pinion bearing -- if you can feel any, IMO there is very little point in putting the diff back together without a complete rebuild.
If you do find that there is play in the pinion, I'd urge you to rebuild it now rather than later -- otherwise you'll destroy the gear set.
I gave up on second hand ones after going through 3 different ones (that felt OK to start with) in four trips -- seems 6.5:1 transfer gears kill them pretty quick. Done 3 trips on one I rebuilt and it still feels nice!
