Yep, another good trip under the belt. Thanks to all who attended, good crew really. To those I didn't get to say bye to....BYE. It was somewhat difficult trying to find the track, eyes were sore at the end of it. Roads home were good, 100k's most of the way except between Farlie and Geraldine. Where is your place pigfarmer? Sleeping in tents wasn't that bad, my boy and I were cosy as, at least it had a good size vestibule to cook in. We even had to rescue two others in the hut that left before us, found them well stuck in a swampy part of the track under the snow. At least they were both toyotas. Neasrlt rolled the pig attempting to follow the track down near the deer fence, snow ledge gave way and she was going sideways real fast. Pointed the nose down rather promptly and nailed it. I'm sure it left a skid mark...in my pants that is. There was another truck in there that wern't staying at the hut. They must have had a cold night, and Im would say a few more to come. OH, and that blue shit. It is good to get pissed on isn't it. It does keep you warm and your lips and tongue tinggling.

So was there many at the hut when you got there...they would be mostly hunters?

Glad the ones who hadn't been there before got to see it in the snow, she's a hard bit of country that place in winter. Tell you what it's nice in summer as well

What do you mean next year, it was a one off. I haven't been in there for about 5 yrs now. Am thinking of doing it as an annual club snow trip though.

Hi all,

I was the one hunting tahr with the 8 year old and staying at the hut on Saturday night. We spend a fair amount of time up the valleys like the McCauly, Hopkins, Godley, etc. We often come across some real drop kicks trying to talk big about how tough their wagons are, how much they have spent, and generally getting pissed and engaging in a lot of loud "take over the hut" type behaviour. It was incredible that after just my son and I being in the hut by ourselves on Friday night to having 13 other 4wds arrive on Saturday that this didnt happen at all. You guys are a credit to 4wders. A pleasure spending a night with a few drinks and pleasant company.
High point, the care shown by your team when my son burnt his hand.
Low point, the snorer you brought with you, could'nt you have left him outside in the snow!
Thanks for a good night and good company on the trip out.

It was a wee bit late, a very weary hillfilly made it home just after 11 :) :)

Cruised all the way rather than rushed.

My wee car seemed awfully low to the ground after Taz's truck :( :(
and I think I left my seats in his truck too

After all the worries about the weather it wasn't too bad a trip.
Rain from Ch Ch to past Culverden, an just a wee bit of sleety snow falling at the top of the pass.
Rahu was clear then fine all the way home to be met by a howling wind that blew most of the night

Love the old chestnut of blaming the NIer for snoring!

I spoke to Andrew Simpson of the trust who built the hut. I know some of you donated on Sunday morning but for those who didn't I am sure you can agree that a few bucks toward this awesome facility is worthwhile. Andrew tells me that the facility is marginal in covering costs but the trust is reluctant to make payment compulsory as they want the facility to be available to all. They are planning to build two more huts, one up the South Opuha, and one at Camp Craig??

As for those keen to make this a yearly trip I suggest planning a trip where the possibility of being snow bound be the plan. Simply wait for the weather forecast to be bad, get a few days off work and get in before it turns to custard. Then sit it out until the sun arrives. The Cantabs will be aware but as a general warning to all take care crossing the McCauly in high water (spring, and/or during NWers). Once the melt starts in spring the water can easily be too high (beyond the door handles) so floating downstream into large rocks is a bit of a hazard (assuming you haven't been flipped by not driving downstream with the tide).

The Surf that we left behind has been there for a few months. Apparently some guys came down from the NI and got snowed in so choppered out and havent been back.

Was an awesome trip!

A bit disappointed with the lack on snow on Saturday but it sure made up for it on Sunday.

Will be back up there again for sure.

As always its the people that make these trips what they are and I really enjoyed the company of everyone there.

Really stoked to read that everyone enjoyed themselves and that we weren't a nuisance to other hut users!

Huge thanks to Nibz for letting us stay on the Friday and to Al for leading the trip. Jason did an awesome job finding the way to the hut in the dark as well. Actually really enjoyed that bit.

Was gutted my camera died on the first day as there was some amazing scenery up there. Just put it back on the charger now and discovered its buggered so that explains why

Hope the Welly dudes had a safe drive back up and enjoyed themselves as much as I did.

Thanks for coming everyone!

Got in the door about an hour ago, thanks for the offer of help with the truck at the ferry terminal skiddy, lost the clutch slave cylinder at Blenheim so had to do the crash gearbox thing the rest of the way home... pain in the arse leaving the ferry and jumping into the peak hour stop-start motorway traffic   but it was pretty good to get off that ferry coz I dont do boats well and was pretty farking green after all those big swells :x :x

Cheers for a great trip guys, Taz the organiser, Al the trip leader even if you are a bloody aussie, Nibs for sorting the accomodation, Jason that got us back to Chch in one piece..... all much appreciated. We were on a pretty tight timeframe but still managed to catch up with Rok, Nibs and Petefj40, a good bunch of guys with some cool trucks :P

Used just under 600 bucks in gas and I think most of that was playing in the snow

Look forward to next years trip and thanks for having us down and looking after us guys

So its Al and Bev I owe thanks to, THANKS. West Islander or otherwise your alright by me. We drove 28,000ks through the outback and found some fantastic people, then spent 6 month working in Melbourne and found some real dickheads living in bars, cafes, etc (same as here really, they just talk funny).

As for Jack he is fine. I was surprised at his level of angst at the time, he normally just toughs it out so I also thought it might be a serious one however the next day he was sweet as. Standard kid, didn't like the idea of having to go to school on Monday as he was convinced that we should have stayed on, perhaps he was right. The weather was perfect on Monday, would have been a great place to be. It looks like we will be back this weekend anyway so hopefully no rain to clear the snow before hand.

Apparently his "current events" story for Monday focused on the chocolate bar he was given (who was that masked lady?).

On the donation subject I have found that the McKenzie Alpine Trust is IRD approved. Ie if you donate you get a tax rebate for doing so. Make sure you keep the receipt and write on the receipt that they are IRD approved for donations.

Cheers
Shane
