HJ45

have just brought a 1980 HJ45 with the 3.6L 6 cylinder diesel motor in her, shes in pretty good nick but theres just a few wee things i want to fiddle with, firstly will the diff ratios match a BJ42? my 42 has discs on the front and was thinking of just swapping whole front axle over...
Also can you get a 5 speed gearbox that will bolt straight onto these motors?
any advice greatly appreciated

yep diff ratios should be the same, most of them are 4.1's. 5 speed gearbox would fit but they are longer so you might have to shift the crossmember (1980 cruiser should have a split transfercase and cross member) and get the drive shaft lengths changed, I think the vacuum 4wd actuator gets in the way of the chassis rail a bit as well, its a lot of mucking around for a 5th gear? You would have to get a 5 speed gear box with the short coarse spline input shaft out of a petrol FJ7x cruiser.

Yep the diff ratios are the same 4.1 ratio, you can get a 5 speed thatll bolt straight up and isnt longer then the 4 speed so you dont need to change drive shafts etc plus it manual 4x4 ingage not vacuum. Is this the truck from Temuka?

That trucks got my old motor in it out of my old HJ45, its only been in there a few months, Yea theres a rare 5 speed that comes in some of the first 5 speed 60 series and i think from memory there imported trucks, i put one in my 40 series and didnt have to change drive shaft lenghts. Most of the 5 speed 60 series here in NZ do have the longer 5 speeds though.

yea the dude i brought it off mentiond it had a replacment motor not long ago. may be a case of having to change gearbox now though, getn quite noisy and doesnt like going in and out of 4wd so could be trasnfer box yet. i take it the shorter ones are hard to come by then?
if it comes to it how hard is it to fit a longer box?

The HJ45s are alot different to FJs/BJs because they have the 6 cylinder diesel mounted to an early coarse spline petrol gearbox with no crossmember under it, they have a short two piece bellhousing which also has the mounts to the chassis to support the gearbox.
So if you wanted to put in a 5 speed the longer verion you would need to put in a crossmember to support the extra weight and lenght, use a longer front shaft from a 40 with a diesel box and a rear shaft you will need shortened.
It sounds like a major but not that bad really.

cheers for that mate. does any body know where i can get a 5 speed box out of a 60? or better still the shorter version out of an early model ?
will i need a 60 series transfer box also, or can i use the original one?

Did you have any problems with engine overhaeting?? water level in radiator drops over a couple of days, been topping it up but keeps dropping and cant find any leaks anywhere.

Hey mate, no it was good as gold when i sold it his mechanic gave it a good check over before he brought it but the guy who you brought it off was bloody ruff on his truck, and that truck got abused aye so who knows what it could be.

still looking for a 5 speed box for the cruiser.is it the lenght of the bell housing that is different between the two 60 deries gearboxes that you were talking about ClassicCruiserSpares? if so wud it be possible to keep the existing bellhousing? or has Toyota not made it that simple.

The gearbox you need is one that came from a petrol 60 series because they have the shorter input shaft and im pretty sure you can use your origanal bellhousing.

cheers. have started thinking that maybe a new motor and box will be easier than pissing around trying to get a 5 speed to fit mine. read somewhere that the 3B has more power than the H engine? if so would this transplant be worth it?
