Hi im new to the forum and new to 4wding in general.
I recently purchased a 1988 Surf which so far has been awesome, but the alternator crapped out so I was told by a auto sparky anyway.
I replaced it with a supposedly working second hand one but my problem has not been solved.
It seems to be only working when im driving at a decent speed(as indicated by the voltmeter on the dash).
All the dash lights were on constantly before including the charge light, but now they go out after driving for a while??
Long story I know, any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated as I am very confused and out of ideas.
Thanks
Stu

Re: Alternator Problem?
try new fan belts as when the belt is old it does not grab the pully properly

Re: Alternator Problem?
I have to charge the battery every night then I get a couple of starts out of it.
Im pretty sure now that I have just bought another stuffed alternator. It wasn't even charging when I was driving today.
Perhaps it just worked for a little while then crapped out too.

Re: Alternator Problem?
take it back to the sparky and get him/her to check if its charging, or it could be a stuffed battery.

Chuck a meter on it at the alt and then again at the battery. Use a really good earth point. Could be crappy leads/connections between the alt and the battery. Dont keep flatning batterys cause they will die to.

If you put your location in your user name thingy, someone local to you may be able to pop round and have a look for you.
