What the pros/cons of getting wider rims?

For the new tyres for my terrano, Ive pretty much decided on the Goodyear wrangler MT/R 31/10.5/r15 The guy at the tyre shop recons il b better to go to a 15x8 rims instead of my current 15x7 rims.

I was wanting to know your guys view on wether its worth the extra $300 odd to get some wider steel rims - he recons he could put them on the 15x7 alloy rims if i really want but didnt explain wot there to gain, i was kinda thinkin he just wanted to suck a few more $$$ outa me.

dont take any notice of the tyre guy. 10.5s are better on 7inch rims.For offroading I run 11.5s on 7inch because they dont push off the rim as easy

I agree there and I'm a tyre guy

but as you will soon read, there are lots of varied opinions

The only benefit of the steel rims is that they will take more punishment off road than the alloys and are repairable ..

I agree with the others though - narrower rim means less chance of popping a bead.

Is 31/10.5/15 on 15x8s a completely bad idea? I want to get wider rims for my GT Radial MT's as it feels unstable on sidlings on the 15x6s they are on at the moment and they'll probably wear a bit better too. I only use these for mild offroading, beach driving and road work.
From what I can work out my current rims are 15x6 +12 offset.
Do I go to 15x8 -24 or 15x7 -15? Bearing in mind would only let the pressures down to around 15-20psi.

Just gonna offer a wee bit more insight

When I had my 40, before I got them beadlocked, I used to run my 33 x 12.5s on 15 x 8 steels . I had them as low as 4psi at times on tracks similar to Rallywoods and never popped a bead.

As soon as I swapped to a more commercially available 15 x 8 steels my tyres would pop off the bead if I lowered them past 12psi.

Now I'v got 15 x 8.5 alloys with the same 33s and run them as low as 15 and never popped a bead.

So reading all that, my experience tells me that different manufacturers will give you a different holding capability on the bead.

the only real way to find out is to give it a go, at least if it doesn't work out, then you will be able to on sell the 15 x 8s easily enough, or save ya pennies and get them beadlocked


just fitted 35 x 12.5s to 15 x 10 steels today, so will be interested to see how well they hold onto the bead.

The good thing about 8" steels is they are cheap enough to buy

its gonna sound weird, but both times my 8s were ROH

the first ones were a trade me bargain that were old school styles with solid spokes

second set were what you would probably pick up now with little triangular spokes styles, the type you see every where.

as a side note, I also had some 10s from mangels

bloody shame that we can no longer get mangels wheels as they were the best you could get





something else to think about, as a tyrefitter previously I found that the factory 15 x 7 Nissan Safari gold coloured steel wheels were bloody hard to pop beads onto in the shop. I would regularly have to pump them up in excess of 50 psi to seat the bead, and they were always a bloody pain to pop the beads off using the tyre machine

If you can get a set of these, then you will be away laughing

Umm I run 15x8.5 alloy wheels on my bighorn (rims originally on my Safari) with 31x10.5 and I haven't had a pop off on any.

don't worry too much mate

different rims and different tahs have different characteristics

so until you actually get them all together and mounted, you will never know

just do it and worry about the little things later
