Hey there.
Does any one know of a good source for new pinion nuts? Toyota wants $25 a piece. That seems a wee bit steep.
Also pinion bearing preload shims. I've got early 80's diffs with solid spacers, not crush sleeves. Toyotas listing for my model sit at around $30 just for one shim.
Cheers guys
Diff pinion nut and shims??
Re: Diff pinion nut and shims??
Don Kyatt Spare parts (09-263 6021) in South Auckland. They do terain tamer parts. I got bits off then when I did my locker and again after I blew the other diff and they are awesome to deal with and actually know what you are talking about.
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

Re: Diff pinion nut and shims??
To do the job properly you need the complete set of 10 shims.
the Genuine Toyota ones go up in 3 thou measurement from about 2.7mm if my memory is right.
The shims supplied by after market people tend to be thin ones around 5 thou , and you have to use a heap instead of one Toyota one which can give trouble. 5 thou is not fine enough for a proper setup.
The other thing you can do is make an oversize solid spacer and then machine down until you end up with the right preload but is a lot of stuffing around. Thats why I keep the complete set of 10 toyota one in stock.
You get what you pay for and the Genuine Toyota ones make a better job.
Cheers Richard

Outta the way sheep shagga !!!!
Re: Diff pinion nut and shims??
Good info, thanks
I will probably end up just machining a spacer the right (or close to it) size. I'm reusing the old bearings and just want to get some preload on them because at the moment there is absolutely none.
I've had to weld up and machine the flange shaft as the seal surface was completely stuffed. These old diffs have been in service for a few years.

Re: Diff pinion nut and shims??
yeah thats what i did.those crush spacers are a pain in the arse.i got a toolmaker mate of mine to turn up a new spacer and we just ground it down till it was right .means you can replace the pinion seal without f##king around with shims etc
