MT or AT for chch area?
MT or AT for chch area?
So my tyres are nearing replacement time and I need to save up so should I aim for a set of muddies or a set of AT's?
Mostly road stuff at the moment and will be shiney stuff when I am down there so will AT's be okay or should I just bite the bullet and get some cheapish MT's?
If I was staying here in Aucks I would go with the muds but I dont know what the conditions down there are like so dont know.

Re: MT or AT for chch area?
i don't know why anyone who wants to do even mild 4wd work would buy anything less than what the manufacturers call MT's

Re: MT or AT for chch area?
For most of the tracks & rivers in canty .... AT's are fine.
In shingle river beds often the less aggressive AT's are better as they dont tend to dig holes & we have lots of shingle river beds here.

did 100% of the shiny truck tracks on AT's including old man range down south and west coast tracks. Youll only need MT's for the more serious tracks where youll get panel damage. South Island doesnt have much mud compared to up north. You also drive for 4-6 hours on road to get to the good 4wd spots of which only 10% of the track requires MT's.
just my 2c worth from having a semi shiny in canterbury for 6 or so years. But I did love my BFG's when i got them but hated wearing them out on the long distances.

Re: MT or AT for chch area?
Looks like I'll go with AT's for the longer life and road manners, but will try and source a cheap set of muddies for play time (or get another toy for the "fun stuff").
This wagon lives predominantly onroad so for now I'll go the soft option. If after a year of living and playing down there I find I need others I'll do it then.
Thanks team for the input.

Re: MT or AT for chch area?
have a chat to rockhound .... his playdo looks good lifted with muds
70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)
Re: MT or AT for chch area?
My 2c worth...
maxis bighorns could be a good compromise.....that or
Silverstone 117 sports
Kumho KL71's
Bridgestone Dueler 673's (all reasonably well priced and fairly effective tyres - both on an off road - from what I have seen)
If you're real keen on an AT, maybe have a look at Silverstone AT117's....probably 40% less than a BFG and kind of similar....

Re: MT or AT for chch area?
I brought a set of BFG's KM2's for the price of my right arm and right leg.
I've only owned them for a few months. Though they perform well on and off road. I won't be buying another set. They aren't wearing well. (and i haven't been doing many skids in em, straight up)
Once they wear out I'll be choosing something else.
Might go back to the old Goodyear Wranglers. Or try some cheap as chips kumos.

Re: MT or AT for chch area?
I got 93000 kms out of my last set of BFG mt's. Set that are on it now have 30000kms under their belt and no noticeable wear yet. I don't drive like Pete though
I honestly don't know why anyone would fark about with at tyres if their rig is going to see ANY offroad work at all. My playdoh only has them on so I can get the mutt and trailer to slightly more difficult spots and we get the odd site that is a bit boggy for work.
At's are very good for sand work and some pea gravel rivers, they are crap (in comparison) on wet grass, slippery tracks and slippery stones (like in braided rivers). In Chch we are not allowed on the beaches (except below high tide nth of the Waimak) and the other conditions far out weigh the pea gravel. MT's will work in pea gravel, but you have to a bit more patient if you go down (1st low and only at idle, no revs) before you climb back on top.
I am telling you that the first time you go out with others and spend most of the day on the strop because the road tyres would not clear, you will be highly pissed off!
But hey, it's your money

Got kumho kl71's now and they are okay but pricey to replace. Maybe some nangkang mudstars on another set of cheap wheels is another option. Dunno. I guess I have a few thou kms left in these tyres and maybe when I get down there I will change my mind and stay with muddies.

Good points.
I'll take them onboard when I make the decision. I'll be down there by then so will have a better idea of usage too.
If you can't drive on the beaches how do we get to the good fishing spots?
