1kzte problems ...

Post by Tlux »

I'm new to this. I have a 93' Hilux 4dr, lifted with 32/11.5's running a 3L engine. I have just purchased a deregd KZN130 Surf with a 1kzte/R151 in it. My intention is to put the 1kz into my lux. The surf is still drivable and has the following problem; it has a flat spot about halfway through the rev range in all gears and there is this light that comes on - on the dashboard that is orange and looks like its got a pic of an engine by it. The guy I brought it off said something about this and said he was sure it was the MAP sensor playing up. I have downloaded a page that shows how to test a MAP sensor and intend to test it within the next few days. He said the scan said a code that meant the MAP sensor ... or something. I dunno, I've never owned a car that had a ECU in it before, lol! Question ... what is the availability of these scanner things? What sorta scanner does a KZN130 take? I'm going to be in this for the long haul so wouldn't mind equipping myself with a scanner if it didn't cost an arm and leg.

I want to get this thing running right in the surf before I commit to swapping it over. I'm in Palmy ... anyone else from Palmy done this sorta thing before?

Cheers.

Hi yah

You need to download an engine manual for the 1KZTE (do a search of this site or Google it, there are a few places that have it 40MB)

Then you can read up and trouble shoot this engine.

And also get the trouble codes etc etc.

we can check it for you here at work...... scan tools arent cheap and not really the thing one buys for diagnosing one ECU!

Mate shes easy as the beauty of being a Toyota you dont need any flash doofers the ecu has the fault diagnostics setup in there already. Just find the dioginistics plug in the engine bay

RETRIEVING CODES for vehicles before 96

NOTE: Not all trouble codes will activate MIL (CHECK ENGINE light)

* Before proceeding, make sure the:
o CHECK ENGINE light circuit is functional. It should be ON when the ignition switch is ON with the engine stopped.
o Battery voltage is above 11 volts.
o Throttle valve is fully closed (Throttle Position Sensor IDL points closed).
o Accessory switches (A/C, etc.) are OFF.
o Engine is at normal operating temperature (if possible).
* Turn ignition switch to ON position.
o Do not start the engine.
o Place a jumper wire across TE1 and E1 terminals in engine check connector.
* Count number of flashes from CHECK ENGINE light.
o If system is operating normally (with no detected faults), the CHECK ENGINE light will blink continuously
and evenly about 2 times a second.
* Otherwise, the light will blink a number of times equal to the trouble code as follows:
o The light blinks only (.5 second ON, .5 second OFF) when indicating a number.
o The light will be OFF for 1.5 seconds between the first digit and the second digit of the code.
o If more than one code is stored, the light will be OFF for 2.5 seconds before the next code is displayed.
o Once all code(s) have been displayed, the light will be OFF for 4.5 seconds and then the whole sequence will repeat.
* The diagnostic code series will continue to repeat as long as the check connecter terminals TE1 and E1 are connected.
* When finished, remove the jumper wire.
* After repairing the malfunction, clear the codes from the ECUs memory.

Here is the fault code list for a kzn130 so just match your flashing code to the list and thats the fault causing your issue
Ive done this so many times on all toyotas, works a treat

Check out my project thread to you might find it interesting, ive just done that exact conversion in a LN61 Surf, Cheers
