Nick's 1KZ-TE LN61 Surf

Post by Morange »

Well here's my 86 Hilux surf LN61 that had a poorly running 2.4T in there when i brought it. Ive been looking for a pretty good version of this truck for a while so i was happy to fix up the engine, Since found out engine was pumping out white smoke and using water

Image

So after tossing up the price of rebuilding up the 2.4 i decided to put my $ more wisely into a 1KZ-TE and R151 gearbox from a rolled bowled and arse-holed KZN130 surf. Worked out really well as i got the entire engine loom from the batteries to the taillights, also gas cut the engine mounts from the chassis

Ive been reading these boards and see alot of people asking about 1KZ conversions so ill go into a bit more detail for people, but feel free to ask anything!

So the conversion started, Out with the 2.4, ground off the old 2.4 engine mounts and dummy fitted the 1KZ with gearbox attached, bolted the gearbox cross-member in place and moved the 1KZ mounts to the appropriate place on the chassis and tack welded in place, Pulled the motor back out and had mounts welded professionally. So engine back in. Drive line wise everything bolted up, had to trim the gearbox tunnel abit for the further forward shifters

Image

Sadly LN61's are IFS (found this out after id made the deal and traveled to wellington to pick it up) however did make it easier as the engine didn't need any sump modification as kZN130's are IFS to

The wiring was a bit of a mission, but i enjoy a challenge and tackled it, cut out all the unnecessary wires in the loom untill it was just the bear basics to run the Engine ECU and 4x4 gearbox ECU, Swapped the KZN130 dashboard into the truck to so a little bit of swapping there to with indicators, 4x4 lights, backdoor lights blah blah blah

Overall the conversion was easy (even more so if you went mechanical injection) Even the power-steering lines bolted up, Little things like custom radiator and heater hoses, Converting alternator to internally regulated. Viscus fan all fitted in with the factory LN61 radiator and shroud.

Image

Engine runs really well but im in the process now of custom making a water to air intercooler setup for it, More pics and details later i guess

Also looking at a front bar setup and body lifts, it looks to much like a road truck

Plan is to get it out in the mud set up a bed in the back and be the tow wagon. Sweet :D

very nice work, a couple of questions :)
Where did you put the computer?
How did you get the loom into the cab?
What have you done for the exhaust?
Legal disclaimer: Any information I may have provided is worth exactly what you paid me for it.

Nice work.
Just one point on the throttle linkage.
The cable is comming out on an angle to the qudrant.
It will eventually fail. Need to get it straight in line.

Have a look at my intercooler DIY install.. You can see the std throttle body (minus the cable to the auto)

Cheers

Cheers guys yeah it does go alot better that's for sure, heaps more torque!

What i did for the loom/computer situation is used the factory KZN130 firewall loom rubber plug bung thing and cut a hole in the firewall slightly smaller than the rubber bung just beside where the water drain for the air conditioning goes out, It was the only place suitable really there was no-ware else going thought the firewall big enough to take the size of the wiring loom. So the computer sits down by the passengers feet, ive temporally cable tied it up to the air con, fan assembly to keep it out of the way, It will fit on the left hand side of the passengers foot-well where the factory glow plug timer sits (ive removed this as the ECU controls the glow on 1KZs and rewired it into the factory 2.4 glow relay) but i need to extend all the wires that go to the ecu by around 20cms just enough to be frustrating really

The exhaust for now ive used the factory dumpipe and flange assembly and run 2.5inch pipe down beside the gearbox till after the transfer case then swapped over to the otherside of the vehicle and joins into the pre existing 2.4 exhaust which luckily is 2.5 aswell

Yeah thanks for the advice mate ive checked out your thread its certainly well done. The throttle cable is the old 2.4 cable just temporally connected up to get things going that's why is cable tied to the bracket haha. Untill i work out the required length for a custom one and whats needed for the new bracket that will be influenced by the water2air cooler
