My 80 series is quite smokey when cold or after idling (appears to be grey) which all but disappears after warming up or driving a few km.
Any tips advice on where to start with diagnosing the problem?
Would start with compression/leakdown but thre is no one locally that can find to do this (anyone know who does this in Nelson or ChCh?)
Will be getting injectors done soon, but would this cause smoke after idling? I'm assuming its more of an oil problem with valve seals or similar, but could be way off mark.
If it is guide seal worn, or there a good product I can use that can reduce the smoke? (to confirm it's oil burning)
Cheers,
Dave

Re: Smokey 1HD-T: where to start?
hi Dave
My 80 is going thru the same issues, and has consumed a bit of oil as well
im doing an oil change today, going to try castrol GTX diesel, its a 25/50 (i think).its thicker than the Castrol techion im currenlty using... we suspect turbo seals as well, but to check are going to run the head breather into a catch can instead of back into the intake. if after a couple of weeks there is oil in the can- stem seal or rings.... if there is oil in intake-turbo seals
will keep you posted

Dieselboy (I think) did a big post about this a year or so ago as to why 80 series always stink - I think it was turbo seals but can't remember - maybe he'll pop in and let you know.
I know on club runs everyone always trys to make sure we don't have to follow another stinkin 80!!

How much oil are you going through? Have done close to 2000km since last oil change and oil level is the same.
Will do another search for any related posts, and may get a catch can sooner as that was on my list too.
Were you going for a proper oil seperator or just the super crap style and fill it with steel wool?
I knew I shouldn't have gone to the dark side and stuck with the good old Nissans

Re: Smokey 1HD-T: where to start?
it had consumed 2 ltrs appx in 6000kms appx.... have now fitted catch can so will keep an eye on that

Re: Smokey 1HD-T: where to start?
as noted in my 80 4 sale thread, with the catch can fitted the blue smoking has been reduced, the downside is that it would possibly indicate something a little wrong inside the engine... if it was turbo seals it would still be blowing blue smoke i guess?

Re: Smokey 1HD-T: where to start?
A lot of the 80# seam to smoke on start up and idle,if its not using much oil I wouldnt stress too much.most have done a few k's by now and just seam to smoke alittle.
Re: Smokey 1HD-T: where to start?
Mine is more of an annoyance than anything, so will try cheap fix-its to try to minimise any smoke and leave it at that.
Will try a supercrap catch can this weekend, and in the next week or 2 get the injectors serviced, as they are due anyway.

Been there, had the smokey on start up, fitted a new set of stem seals, improved it a LOT but didn't solve it completely
