legal maximum length of leaf spring shackles

Post by andy3542 »

Does anyone know what the legal maximum length of leaf spring shackles can be without having to get them certified?

im looking at installing longer ones to stop my 33's rubbing on the wheel arches.

Cheers

What sort of truck? front and rear?
Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

Land rover 2a. Yeah, I'd like to change both. I wasn't sure if there was a set size or whether it depends on the truck?

if it makes the vehicle handle strange it will fail a wof. And excessivly longer shackles alone are gonna do this cos the steering geometry will be all up the shitter. Mate went all tightass and just put mega long shackles on his cruiser for bigger tyres. Thing tries to kill you whenever your behind the wheel.

is there a shackle size when everything goes to shit? or does it all depend on the truck? im only after a couple more inches for the clearance...

to get a couple inches you would have to add 4 inches i think to the shackle. The cruiser i seen had ~300mm+ front shackles and yeah refer previous post. I would save for proper springs aye. At a min get front springs.

springs require mods to the chassis and certification and $$$ which im trying to avoid.

I think you can shim the diffs to sort diff angles but it sounds like it might be a bit too much for that.
Someone else stick in their opinion

I've been told 135mm centres.
If you break it... build it stronger.

another commonly heard is no more than 150% of original, depending on who your wof guy is and who you know, get a bit of box 2-4 inches x width of chassis,45degree the ends and however long to look right and drop the mounting point down, then just extend the shackles a bit,the longer they are the spongier the ride tends to be or at least what ive found, and i know a box with reasonable shackles looks allot better than massively long shackles
