1995 hilux surf ssr-x 1kzte major problems. Please assist.

Post by simmo »

I own a 1995 Hilux Surf SSRX kzn130 with a 1kz-te.
My truck has recently developed a major problem and i'll explain exactly what went on...
My truck ran sweet to begin with but in the high revs and high speed it pulsed a bit but kept going (wasn't too bad at this stage.) I went out of town for a trip and my truck starting missing and unresponsive with foot down in the high revs.
From here on, the problem got worse and i eventually couldnt get 30kph out of it and up hills it almost went nowhere. When it becomes unresponsive it puffs out a cloud of white smoke and a hell of alot of it. I bridged the diagnosis port off and it came up with the fault code. timing control valve. code 14 from memory. I need to know wheither i need to be looking at my injectors or my injector pump for this problem and if you can shed some light for my it'd be very grateful. The previous owner was quite bad at maintenace and keeping up to date with the service of this truck so i used engine flush and changed the oil to high performance diesel oil. I also ran some injector cleaner. please let me know what you think.

the timing control valve is in the injector pump.

Not the usual 1KZ cracked head is it?
When mine did this it puffed out white smoke. Especially as you loaded the throttle having been idling.
Is it using water?

have you checked the loom with multimeter to make sure you don't have a broken wire/connection and/or swap the computer with a known good one?

mine randomly surges sometimes am hoping it is just a leaky o ring on top of injector pump, ive also noticed it blows water into the expansion bottle could it infact be the head gasket? doesnt seem to get hot

ive changed ecu, same problem. wouldnt expect there to be a broken wire. at cold its a pain to start but when it starts it ok at low rpm and plotting along. then if if give it some foot it cuts out.

filters? Air leak into the fuel pick up to the injector pump?

I'm guessing though. :?

Have you had a Leak down check done on the cylinders to rule out head/piston damage? check glow plugs for damage, get injectors checked then change fuel pump would be my next steps.

Simmo, I think your fault code has already told you what is wrong with your engine, the timing control valve, being an EFI system the pump timing is activated by an electric solenoid ( I am not exactly sure how it is controlled ) with out the pump being able to control the advance and retarding the timing will be all over the place and with retarded timing you will get white smoke and the power (what power from the 1KZ) will be lost. You get the same effect as in a petrol engine with the advance and retard mechanism in the distributor not working. Try and find out what activates the timing control valve.

Id get the same sized tyres too, cause you are going to damage the transfer case running differing sizes and off road it wont be helping either.

I had a similar problem with a Nissan. I took the filter and spring out of the fuel inlet on the pump and all was cured. If you look where the inlet for the fuel goes into the pump, there'll be a banjo connection on the pump. Remove this without loosing the copper washers and then shine a light into the hole. In there should be a small filter and spring. You can either clean the little filter or just throw it away, along with the spring.

The Injector pumps that have the fine gauze filter on the inlet fitting are the rotary pumps, the EFI pump is a different system.

simple questions?
Have you checked the exhaust for excessive back pressure, these things have a problem with the muffler collapsing internally, the 1st thing i did with mine was get rid of that huge can on the back!
Second question, is the turbo boosting?

i found this on a website!

My hilux is experincing loss of power and torque on a permanent basis. Initially it was a random ocurance where the power would reduce and soon after result in 100% loss. The car would only idle and there would be no response or increase in revs wen pressing the accelerator.. just continued idling and smoke thrown out the back.. probably unburnt fuel. The problem would be fixed and back to full power by turning the engine off for 15 minutes. This pattern of reduced power followed by total power loss would happen every 3 or 4 months but in the last 12 months, the car has been in a permanent state of reduced power where i cannot drive in 4th gear at 60km/hr , requiering to drop back into 3rd. Hills would sometimes require me to drop back into 2nd. I havent experienced total power loss in this time.
In the early days , the local dealership tested for a few days (expensive) and eliminated various components leaving just the engine management computer board as their suggsted culprit... The car did not keep a computer error tat could be read but fortunately while they were tsting the problem of total power loss occured and error 14 flashd up on their equipment. The board didnt test faulty but it was the only thing left. The quote to fix this was $3500. and no gurantees it would work.
The car has only done 65,000 Km... The only modifiation to it is a 2 1/4 inch exhanust system from front to back which made a signifiant difference to the power... 4th gear at 60 k's was very responsive to my accelerator request for more speed ... Q. Did this model have a catalytic convertor and and associated O2 sensor. This convertor was removed when the exhaust was changed. If there was also an O2 sensor, could it be this sensor that is causing the issue?

he is having the same trouble as i am and HIS problem turned out to be the ecu was faulty... what the heck could mine bee?
