Cooling in a 93 1kz surf
Hey guys,
I am planning on doing a bit of maintenance work on my trucks cooling system before i go and get a mechanical injector pump fitted to it. I have a couple of questions that are puzzling me. Firstly i am going to be fitting a custom made winch bar that i have designed on cad and tested so i would roughly know the limits of it. It is going to have 2 cutouts for a transmission cooler and an oil cooler. I already have a davies craig 678 installed for the transmission. Would you recommend installing a 4 core radiator if i am going to be running the 2 external coolers as well. Space is a bit of a premium with the 1kz's and i am struggling to see how i will fit a 4 core radiator (i have a body lift with radiator drop brackets which have pushed the radiator closer to the fan) in without the fan destroying it when going through water. Would it be wiser just to install a new factory size one? Is there such thing as too much cooling?

You could install an alloy radiator.... they cool 20% better than a copper one.
Also install a late model lower temp thermo stat ... they open wider & at 71 rather than 82.
I see you have lowered your existing radiator to line up to the fan due to a body lift.Make sure the top tank is still above the motor to ensure you dont get any air blockages inside the engine.

Thanks for the reply. I called up A1 radiators in Chch and the guy who i talked to there said yes the cool better but you basically can't fix them if they get a hole in them and 2 they are more susceptible to corrosion through items which are not grounded properly. The non easy to repair part is why i am thinking of sticking to copper as i don't want to have to fork out for a new radiator if a stone one day decides to flick up and hit my radiator. I have a lower thermostat in there. i believe it is a 78 degree one which has helped. That is an interesting point. I will have to check that as air pockets could be causing some silly little anomalies i am experiencing at the moment. With the 2 other coolers, should i fork out for a 4 core though?

cheers for that. Yeah i might skip getting a 4 core and see how it goes with a new standard radiator with an external transmission cooler and an external oil cooler. I think what i will do it run a pump from the sump back to the sump for cooling the oil with a thermo switch on it. apparently they use them in nascar for cooling oil and they really work well. I tend to tow big loads so this might be the key to avoid cracking a head.

I have an 94 1kz surf auto and had overheating problems for a while.
I had radiator cleaned and checked. Fitted an external transmission cooler. Also fitted genuine 82 degree thermostat.
It turned out to be stuffed viscous coupling for radiator fan.
Have fitted a VDO temp gauge to actually tell what the temperature is
Now factory gauge stays solid and VDO gauge has only ever gone to 96 and that was pushing hard from Chch to Kaiteriteri, through to Blenheim and back to Chch in Febuary. This was resonably loaded towing a good size jetski trailer
Have also fitted KZN185 surf intercooler which has helped.
When I first got it the factory gauge used to jump a wee bit going up ski field roads. This season it is sweet as

Yeah i took my radiator out the other day and cleaned it. It was a disgrace haha. It was half blocked. It got hot a couple of times but i think it is fine. Mine has a prado thermostat which i believe is a 78 degree thermostat and it sits at around 74-75 on my aftermarket thermometer (supercrap one). So it isn't running hot. when i give it the boot it will climb up over about 85 degrees. I am just waiting to get a plate made so i can install my intercooler. I can't be bothered buy one as i have all the pipe work and i just need an intercooler.

Dragging up a old thread, got a couple of questions about this as well.
I towed a car transporter & car over the kaimais from the hamilton side to Tauranga a while back. Temp gauge went up to about 3/4 at one point, stopped and noticed it had a small crack in the radiator by the filler/cap. Radiator is in pretty average condition. When i pulled out to weld up it was pretty gungy inside, full of brown crap.
So i got it welded up gave it a good clean out with a hose and run 2 lots of radiator flush through it which got a lot of crap out.
Next time towed a car from Tauranga to Hamilton it got a bit hot at the top of the Kaimais again (The tauranga side) so wondering weather I need a new radiator. The motor was supposidly rebuilt about 2 years ago so would think it should be alright inside there.
Any suggestions??
Also iv noticed the trans get reasonably warm around the tunnel on a long drive/bit of a load on or in. Is this common also or should i be fitting a trans cooler to the auto as a few above have??

You prob need to have the top tank taken off & have them rod the tubes... no doubt they are full of crud.
Avoid using overdrive ( if auto) when towing or driving on hills.
use low range when 4wding as much as possible as greatly reduces trans & engine temps.

By the time get that done its probably easier and only a bit more to buy a new one for piece of mind ??
Yes was using overdrive & low also when required.
Anything else can be done to stop these getting a bit warm, dont want to cook the head or anything haha.
Is fine normal driving etc just towing

Install a 71 degree thermostat toyota part number 90916-03121
Use the aircon fan to blow some extra air thru the radiator.
Disconnect the wire then is on top of the pump ..this will stop it engaging when you turn on the aircon..but the fan will still work.

So after replacing waterpump, thermostat and radiator turns out my viscous fan had no clutch fluid in and was poked....worked fine at crusing but under load wasnt running fast enough.
Fixed that up and good as new now!!

You can buy Viscious Fluid from BNT ...stocked code is VF-50 from memory.
A month or so ago i topped mine up now it runs cooler & roars when i first start motor for about 30 seconds.

Seems to be the viscous hub thats the major factor to the overheating, mine is poked aswell, was told by toyota that the kzn185 fan hubs cant be serviced
new ones arent cheap
iv also herd that a kzn165 hilux radiator will help alot, just need to swap bottom tanks over for trans cooler if auto, the 165 rad is twin core whereas the 185 is single core? dont know how true that is tho

I would of refilled it had i known it was empty prior to drilling a hole in it to lock it to test if it was poked or not lol....oh well new viscous it is.

I got one quoted of BNT and they wonted 540 dollars, so jumped on ebay and got one from the states for 100 bucks to my front door in 6 days, oh and they wonted 60 dollars for the oil too, new one works great

Yeah a genuine one wass $1200...
Am awaiting one to come in from a mate think around $135 new so should do the trick.
