How much preload for the kingpin bearings?

Post by turoa »

supralux has sent me one of his fancy swivel housing rebuild kits. Before I start rebuilding it, how much preload should the kingpin bearings have? I read on the net, 0.40mm is good? you could also give the answer to me as; There should be put number here of those fancy shims that come with the kit

With the tie rod disconected from the stearing arm, use a spring balance , 4 to 5Lbs Preload, while it is on the move. 18 to 2.3kg

 heres a tip for ya to measure the braking moment on the bearings, its what I do
With the felt seals undone get a full 4L contator hang it on a string run over a bar to the end of your steering arms this is equivelent to the normal setting. I work on about 4-6L range due to the bigger wheels and harder use
here this might help  explain my shit discription

Just increase or decrease the shims till you get the right amount, make certain you have the same amount of shims top and bottom
