looking at a disco

Post by Petemcc »

Hi guys, I would like to know some opinions on this

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =311496996

went to have a look tonight and most things checked out ok.

oil leak at the back of the motor, guessing rear crank seal, he said it doesn't require topping up between changes. doesn't concern me too much unless it gets bad enough I will need to change it.

brakes were very soft and you didn't get that ABS feel when hard on them but it did seem to pull up well and didn't lock up. What are the brakes normally like on these? I didn't have time to check for leaks as was running late but didn't see anything when looking around before taking it for a drive

trans seemed to change well but has that diesel auto feel where it seems to work the torque converter a lot or something. When accelerating up to 100 the revs sit between 3000 and 3700 ish the whole time as it chops through the gears. revs at 3000ish at 100k is this normal?

I want to be able to tow my boat with it a bit. Has any one done any towing with these? The boat would be around 1000kg, maybe a bit less but I haven't weighed it, not too heavy though. I know that no diesel will like it if you tow hard with them and keep it pinned in high revs up hills etc but it seemed to me like it would be working above 3000 rpm weather you like it or not. Thoughts?

Cruise control, I would love for this to go, a quick search on the net shows its normally vacuum hoses, anyone had any other experiences?

Before buying it I will probably take it for a spin with the boat on the back to see how it handles it, check for brake leaks and get a compression and leak down test done (seemed pretty mint but have heard they can get head gasket issues?)

Lastly what do people think of the price? Seems a little steep to me but I haven't seen that many selling to get an idea of what they are worth. I was thinking closer to 6?

Any other input would be great. I plan to use it for traveling back and forward between chch and twizel and towing the boat around a bit on the weekends. Seems like a good option being nice and economical though will be hard to get used to the lack of power again haha.

Mate runs one and its seems to go alright. He tows a 6.5m RIB with it all over the place including up ninety mile beach. He also pulled my Zuk to Norwest no worries. (1500kgish on trailer)

If you by it make sure that every service you adjust the tappets. He has broken a couple and after the last one I was looking though his book for the adjust/down relationship to readjust and it was in the 5000k service section. explained why he has broken 2 in 12 months.

Other than that check under the driver floor carpet for rust. He has had issues with 2 discos getting wet there.
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

From this distance it looks to be a good safe buy. Good proven engine design and these will tow 1000kg without problems (max braked rating is 3500kg so 1000 is nothing).

Price is about right.

check for rusting up around the small roof windows can be a common problem on these, check the area on passenger side kick panel for moisture as well near the computer(on a petrol one)
