Sadams Flatdeck 6.0 litre chevy, runs & pulls 3rd gear skids

Postby Sadam_Husain » Tue Aug 24, 2010 10:47 pm

After sitting in the shed for almost a year the flatdeck got snuck off to Sig's Monster Garage in Stokes Valley a couple of weeks back

Its getting another engine upgrade (technicaly engine number 5 but I'm calling it number 4  ) after I ran the crank and bearings in the old 350 and its overdue for a bit of a general body and chassis tidy up

Image

I brought a chev LQ9 engine a while back and its spent a few months collecting dust in Stinkys workshop untill he threatened to stick it in Taz's redneck truck if I didnt do something with it. Its the high performence truck version LS2 engine, it came out of a 2004 or 2005 silverado and uses a cast iron block, alloy everything else and all the 6 litre LS2 stuff inside. Sigs making a start on his new 70 series project sticking an LS1 into it so by doing mine at the same time its just a matter of making 2 of everything as he goes, we've got the same bellhousings and everything else so they will be the same twin plate clutches, the wiring looms will be stripped down to the same wires and all that sort of stuff etc

Image

The bodys getting a bit tired, there isnt too many straight pieces left on it and the panels are starting to suffer from a bit of rust but the tub is still in pretty good nick so theres a few replacement panels arriving for it, got given a new fiberglass roof from G.Guy for a bargin giveaway price and picked up a good rust free drivers door the other day and think I have my hands on a good passenger door and windscreen frame but still have to follow them up. The guards should be easily repairable and its not hard to find guards for those things if they turn out a bit worse than they look?

first thread here http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 18&t=22302

So
Will need a hand from a few people to get the tray off the back of the truck on Saturday if anyones free and are also planning to waterblast as much mud as we can get out of the chassis, strip off the side bars, front clip and roof and start cleaning up the chassis with a few sanding discs and get some rust converter on it and prepare it for painting and also planning to drink a few cans and talk a bit of shit

Where: Monster Garage Stokes Valley

When: Sat 21st August from 10am onwards

Beer and BBQ provided: Yep

If you dont know the address pm me or Sig or contact on 0274 424080

Parking would be prefered up on the street so the shared right of way dosent get blocked and Sig and Mrs Sig can get in and out to get the kids off to sport and back.

I'll have some sanding discs but could do with another grinder or 2

Thanks for all the help with the truck last weekend guys, just got a little bit to finish off to get the chassis ready for preping and painting

Only way I can get the 800kgs of mud out of the chassis is to pop the cab off (4 bolts, brakeline and steering shaft) and tip the chassis on its side to hose and rod out the chassis so the mud can drain out so will need a little bit of lifting power to tip it on its side, usuall beer, nibbles, bbq etc provided :P Shouldnt be a lot of work this one, just standing around drinking and talking shit while me and Jerry are busy hosing all the crap out

Where: Monster Garage Stokes Valley

When: Sunday 29th August from 10am onwards

Beer and BBQ provided: Yep

Thanks for all the help again guys, I know most of you only had a few hours to spare coz of other family duties and stuff

got the cab off and the rest of the interior stripped out ready for a bit of a tidy up and repaint, dropped the gearbox out and waterblasted 25 years of oil and grime off it, turned the chassis on its side and waterblasted and rodded out as much mud as we could get out of it and dropped it back onto its wheels again.

Next:
finish sanding remaining bits of chassis and get some rust converter and paint onto it then the engine and gearbox with the new twin plate clutch gets mounted back into the chassis, then we will need some more man power again to stick the repainted tub back onto the chassis and bolt it down

It was the only way to get all the mud out of it Jase

The tub's off to the sandblaster this week, almost no rust in it at all, just a bit of surface rust underneath on the floor at the back and they reckon that'll come out with the sand blasting, we opened the back of the sills up and it was like the day it came out of the factory inside, no rust, no mud just nice factory paint, a bit different with the rest of it, the back panels still like new but I had to throw away the windscreen frame, roof, both doors and the outer guards?

I've got 2 mint doors and a new fibreglass roof sitting here for it and are looking around for 2 guards at the moment

did you forget to take your concrete pills this week

they weigh fuk all, easy to lift off by yourself

or you could actually use the factory hinges and use it like the bonnet it is

inner guards stay in place and one piece front end lifts up like bonnet, like this..............

Image

or imagine that with a one piece front end on it as well and you get the idea

couldn't find the pic I was after

update:
there isnt any photos coz jerry hasnt been lurking around since he picked up his lexpos and got it out of the workshop, the body has been at the panelbeaters for the past 3 weeks, tub has been stripped out to a bare shell and sand blasted along with the inner guards and front panel, the floor had been repaired a few times previously and came up a bit porus after the sand blasting so Hayden chopped both sides out and folded up some new floor wells and welded them in and pulled the drivers B Pillar off and straightened it out so it looks like new again

Image

the tub repairs are finished now and the underneath has about 3 litres of underseal on it, threw away both doors, bonnet, windscreen frame, roof, both outer guards and found some straight rust free ones, the truck has panels from 5 donors as well as the origional body now, Blackdeath is picking out the colour for the truck so I can complain to him if I dont like it, everythings getting preped for painting now and it should all be finished by the end of next week ready for reassembling?

Spent a few nights around at Sig's shed pulling the transferbox apart to put the PTO drive gear in, ended up being a bit of a rebuild replacing the idler shaft, thrust washers and housing coz the inside of the case got a bit chewed when the thrust washer wore through, 3 housings later we found one that fitted correctly

got some of that POR15 shit to stick on the chassis next weekend

edit*
theres a bling twin plate clutch and some header plates, collectors and tube and stuff sitting in Sig's workshop ready to go

edit again**

got some photos of the bling bits that Sig and Karl have been making up when I was around there finishing off sanding up the chassis with Abbo yesterday, Jerry still hasnt been doing his usual lurking around corners with his camera taking pics lately so I had to do it myself

The twin plate clutch is made and bolted onto the flywheel, its using a standard 2F cruiser pressure plate and twin clutch plates that have had the centre hubs turned down and modified, theres a bush to locate the spigot bearing into the back of the crank at the right depth and the new Mk1 release bearing carrier is still under R&D to get it to fit in there with a standard cruiser clutch fork. Theres a box of exhaust bits with header plates, collectors, mufflers, pipes and bends and stuff waithing to get made up once the engine and cab are back on the chassis
