Steering Damper Info required!!

Gday out there in the offroad world,was wondering if anyone had any info on how the performance of a Rancho RS9000 shock absorber,which has 5 adjustable impact settings on it,would work as a steering damper.I currently abuse a Safari offroad but it has extremely light steering and was hoping this shock would provide some resistance.this shock is certainly an option simply for its reputation and for the dollars i can purchase them for.But would really like a bit of advise from anyone regarding its use as a damper.Cheers.[/b]

Dunno if you could use a Rancho shock as a damper but Rancho make steering dampers

cheers sadam,ive emailed that link to see if they have further info.Have met a few people saying they can be used but want to be certain.

If this is an actual shock, most shocks require bleeding after lying on their sides and develop air pockets.

They're selling ex-Aussie so you've got to pay duty or gst or something on the goods if they send anything into the country for you, someones grumbling about it on his trademe feedback :-@

This is the trip reports forum, don't think you'l get to many replies in here and i can't move it for ya either.......

But as was said, shocks of any sort don't like being used on their side. Even if they are foam cell.

I currently have a Rancho RS5000 as a steering damper co's some one told me it would work ok as it was foam cell.

Thats not the case.

When i take it off,i have to pump it a couple of times to get it to work properly again.

They still have oil in them, so it plays tricks on the valving, the air space in the shock is just taken up the closed cell foam to prevent airation of the oil under hard use. Same principle as a gas pressureised shock like a munroe, except you get a softer ride with the foam cell system.

The shock is not designed to be run upside down or on its side. Its designed to be used as a shock absorber in the upright position.

Get a proper purposly designed steering damper.

Hey there Pete,thanks for pointing that out still trying to navigate my way around the ORE site.Is there any way I can move this thread to the appropriate area?.......Anyway about the shock situation, i do recall our conversation the other day about your RS5000,and this kinda instigated the questioning of the 9000 acting as a damper.Let me know if you do go ahead and change your application with your damper.Cheers Dude.

GST on aussie imports

GST in aus is only payable on items purchased in Aus. Anything coming over here is (or was last time i got gear from there) exempt from GST, although the aussie companies will still try to charge ya for it.

Import duty applies only to good over a certain value, unsure of what that is but i believe it was $700.00 a few years back.
