Auto Lockers in Daily drivers

Post by Sketchy_Racer »

Hey guys,

Anyone out there that runs a auto locker of a sort in the rear end of their daily driver? How do you find them?

I would like to invest in one but can't compromise daily driving too much as I need my vehicle for towing my race trailer around.

Dumb question but do they still work in reverse all good? I would have thought the ratcheting system in them would slip under reverse load.

Cheers,

I drive my hilux with a lock-rite on the road heaps.
You have to drive it with a little care as it has changed its`road habits a little.
When cornering you brake in the straight then go around corner using a little excellerator, when wet or on shingle roads i have to be very careful (mostly due to mud tyres)the rear can step out.
But generally its no different to a normal diff.
Yep...does work in reverse.

As above, noisy an a pain, but not unbearable. will wear your tires down a lot faster, and you`ll get a bit of chirping turning at low speeds.

That said, offroad it makes a whole world of difference.

Got front and rear done in my lux (ln65). Makes a massive difference for towing - you will love it.

But yep you cant treat your truck like a F1 car esp in the wet... steering will become alot more "firm" at lower speeds (if you do the front) but you wont look back makes a huge difference off road.

I barely noticed any difference in my 80 series - maybe because of the extra weight?

No ratcheting noises, the odd sudden bang and of course the inside wheel having a bit of a cry if I power on through a slow tight turn...

Off road, WOW :D

What truck you looking to put one in?

I have an auto locker installed into a 9" Landcruiser carrier that I was going to put up on Trademe this Sunday.

It's for a back of a D21 Terrano, easy enough to find as heaps of places to them for the front diffs on safari's which are the same.

That Just Diffs slight looks bloody good! Might have to hit that one up once I get the Gbox and clutch sorted!!
