Hey guys,
I thought I was lucky enough to get away with just a stuffed mainshaft bearing, but no, I wasn't.
The counter shaft, where the counter drive gear mounts has chipped and stuffed the shaft around where the two keys mount into it.
A few questions,
1: Does anyone know if the Ca18 gearbox out of some skylines and s13's have the same gear cluster and ratios of the D21?
2: Does anyone have a old stuffed gearbox laying around they wanna get rid of (hoping the counter shaft is still in good nick)
3: Does anyone have a counter shaft they want to sell???
I'm rightly stuck at the moment as this is my only transport and apprentice wages are gonna struggle to buy me a quick solution.
Cheers,
-Sketchy

Re: Gearbox Fun on D21 Terrano - Help?
Me again with some bad news. the cheap as chips CA18 boxes while the same centre section and valve body etc have different ratios. NOt a lot but a little. I looked when I was looking a gearing options for my winch truck which runs a ca18de (now +R) I cant recall exactly but I think first is lower and the jump between gears smaller in the ca18 box. I'll see if I can find the info I had.
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

Re: Gearbox Fun on D21 Terrano - Help?
Thought I would let you ya's know I'm halfway to getting it sorted.
Dave from Wellington Automotive Gearbox Specialist sorted me out with a new (to me) counter shaft, bloody helpful guy!
Just gotta save a few more pennys for some bearings and I'll rebuild it and gonna do the clutch as well as it is very worn! Almost on the rivets, yet it seemed strong as when driving.. weird! The gearbox was a prick to get out so don't wanna to it again anytime soon!
It's no surprise the gearboxes shit themselves on these, they are way to small to be handling the torque and vibration the 4cyl diesel makes!
If you hear gearbox noise in these, get them pulled straight away, if you keep driving them with a vibration or chatter then it is rooting the counter shaft (thats if the Main Shaft bearing colapses like it did on mine)

Re: Gearbox Fun on D21 Terrano - Help?
bugger, Did they both go south on you?
They are a poor/inadequate design for what is being asked of them!
Lubrication to the front bearing is very inadequate! I have upgraded the front bearing to a high load sealed unit which will take care of both the lack of lube and the load the motor will put through it.
I went a bit overboard and machined the bearing surface in the bell housing as it was out of spec for a bearing fit so machined up a shouldered sleeve insert and pressed that in which should hopefully also help with bearing degradation.
All that's left now is to save some coin for a new clutch and machine the flywheel... hmm to lighten or not... yea right!
