Changing a Flat..
Changing a Flat..
Hi All. Have installed a set of OME 2" Lift kit and on my truck 2 weeks ago and currently running 31" AT tyres. Just been thinking what do people that have lifted their truck do with regards to way of jacking their car up in an event of a flat tyre on the road? My factory little bottle jack, well is more like a dead weight right now. Do I get a bottle jack and a big solid piece of timber for the jack to be on so it can lift the car?? or is there a better way???

hi lifts are great, dangerous if you don't know how to work them but great.
BUT they are only any good if you have jacking points for them. Sounds stupid but the amount of people that carry a hilift and then find they have nothing to jack off when they need to is crazy!

Re: Changing a Flat..
factory jack is find on road block of wood and high lift offroad seems to work sweet

89 safari, pto winch, 33x15 simexs. sliders,75mm lift . turbo intercoolered
Re: Changing a Flat..
On the road I have lifted a rear tyre with a dirt bank. Kinda hory. Also packed up under a diff with wood and dug a hole out around the wheel to change it when i've been offroad.
(Always have my hi-lift now after that incident)
But yeah high lift is the best i have found. Can be unpredictable though. Do need to have places to lift from too.
I have the bigger of the 3 hi lifts and theres not much travel left in it changing 35's on the patrol with 3in sus lift.
Bottle jack and a block of wood could be fine with 31's, offroad could be a bit harder to use though.

bottle jack and wooden block. if you are offroad then you have other options (like Swamped used). If you really feel the need to buy a lump of steel and cart it round go for it.
Re: Changing a Flat..
Had to change a safari front 33 with a factory bottle jack, (insert tui ad), needed 1 jack to lift the wheel up high enough to get a second jack under with wood to lift the flat wheel high enough to get the spare on, and that was on a nice flat road.
I learn't at 4.30am on a back country road in the middle of friggin nowhere, realized I had no jack handle but I did have a baby shifter
wait 1 hour for the closest person to bring a second jack, which happened to be my mum (try ringing your mum at 5am)
The worst part was I was thinking about this at home ages before and should of / could of / would of.............
My advice is, what ever method you choose, let the air out of your tyre and swear / curse, call your truck names with a cold beer in your hand, sitting on the driveway at home.
The best part, this thread made me remember I still have to get a jack handle

Sage advice there. Practise in a perfect environment and if its hard then figure another way. Dont forget to factor in the reduced height of the tyre (and diff/body etc) when you measure stuff (when it's flat I mean).

Re: Changing a Flat..
If you are struggling to get factory jack under axel when your tyre is flat, try driving up onto your spare first. I've done it with an HQ once.
If you break it... build it stronger.

Was going to suggest that as well.
I hiffed my factory bottle jack (Nissan). Was one of those ones you twist. Replaced it with a hyd one.
High lifts are good but are heavy and take up a fair bit of room depending what you drive and if its a daily or not.

Re: Changing a Flat..
confused.
You are putting the jack under the axle, and not the chassis, right?
IIRC I've changed my 31's and 37's using the factory nissan jack under the axle and had no problems.
changed flat 31" with factory jack and had no problem.
unsure as to why a lift would alter jacking requirements unless you are jacking the body and not the axle.
Sorry if this has been covered up there.

Re: Changing a Flat..
If I'm using a hi lift, I hook a short chain or strop between the chassis and the axle. This means the suspension doesn't go to full extension before the tyre lifts off the ground.

Your factory jack must be different to mine haha. Havn't been able to lift mine enough to change tyres. Still have to dig out around under them. You lifting on the diff pumpkin or somewhere else odd?
And yes with a hi lift I lift off the body. Trolly jack goes off the diff obviously.
I'll have to try strapping the diff next time, would give me a way better lift I'd expect, cheers.

Re: Changing a Flat..
just the grey nissan jack which telescopes upwards?
Pretty sure I just put wood under it to get max upwards movement from full down to full up of the jack.
I jack under the axle near the arm mounts iirc. not the diff head or anything.
I don't even have a trolly jack

Re: Changing a Flat..
The problem with a big tyre is when it is flat alot of fatory jacks won't lift high emough to then get the spare (full inflated) on. So it takes 2 bites to get the axle high enough.
If both tyres are inflated then there's no issue as you only need to lift a small way.
As said above a 33has about 9" of sidewall so when completely flat a long way to lift the truck.
