HJ45 longterm project.
HJ45 longterm project.
I have an HJ45 that is pretty much stock standard which i am planning to modify/tweak as i can afford it/get around to it, so i thought id start a thread so i could ask a couple of question about various things.
I have a set of 33" buckshots on 10 inch rims which rub on the disc break calipers that ive put on it. should i change my rims for offset ones or will wheel spacers do the trick?

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
Depends on what are you going to be doing with it. Is it off road only or will you be trying to get a WOF?
How much do the rims hit the calipers? Heaps or a little?

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
what kind of 10" rims have you got
most of the readily available white spoke 10" rims are a negative 44 offset, and shouldn't really have any rubbing issues

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
used on the road to so will need to pass a WOF. local rural garage anyway which im sure would overlook spacers, im more concerned about the spacers being a week point. they dont hit the calipers by a lot but enough to make me want to do something about it.
unsure of rim make they just look like normal whitespokes though. discs are off my bj42 which had them fitted when i got it

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
is it front or rear callipers that are rubbing and are they cruiser callipers or something else?
Re: HJ45 longterm project.
front calipers, ah ill have to find tomorrow.
Re: HJ45 longterm project.
talked to previous owner and he reckons theyre cruiser callipers. i see on the SNR website that you can get spacers up to 3" wide, are these road legal?
Re: HJ45 longterm project.
From memory its 20mm max for a spacer, and 27mm for an adaptor, plus other criteria about stud length, locating and fixing.
If you break it... build it stronger.
Re: HJ45 longterm project.
Think its 6mm max for slip on spacers an 27mm max for bolt on both should be certed.
Do your calipers look like these? If youve got early cruiser ones they should look like the ones on the right.

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
yea callipers same as ones on the right. would spacers put a significant amount of strain on my hub bearings? or in saying that it would be the same as offset rims wouldnt it?
Re: HJ45 longterm project.
It's a common problem - to do with the shape of the rim centres rather than the offset. The slip-on spacers are the easy answer. They work well, as long as your wheel studs are long enough. I think the legal requirement is at least 7 turns on the wheel nut. The skinny ones aren't too obvious to a WOF inspector and I never had any trouble with them, but I think they technically require LVVTA certification.
I've heard of some people grinding the edge of the caliper housing since it only needs about 3mm to get clearance and they've got plenty of meat, but I was a bit reluctant to do that...

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
muddy's on the money..
either get some slim slip on spacers and run the risk of non certification or grind the calipers a touch.
oh, and ya forgot the most important thing.

As Nibs said pics are the key, your rims must be a strange offset. I used the bigger calipers (LN130 surf) on the left on the front of my 40 with 15x8s (-24) with no rubbing at all.
The smaller ones on the right are standard on the front of 70 series, hiluxs etc. They were my rear ones

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
I think jafas selling trailgear 4340 Chromoly CVs at about half the price of those TM ones, there was a thread up about Chromoly CV's on here a couple of weeks ago
unless you've got lots of horsepower, front diff lock, big tyres and driving like you stole it standard CVs should be fine in general

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
was opting for the lexus so i could use a cruiser gearbox and therefore keep my pto winch and also had a mate of a mate who could wire it into the 45s loom for me (apparently done a couple before). What are your reasons for preffering the 350??

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
The 350 will bolt straight up to your gearbox so you can keep you pto, they are alot easyier to wire than a lexus, they have alot more torque, and will cost shitloads less to put in.
I can help with the parts to fit the 350 if you do go that way ive got them sitting in my garage that i dont need anymore.

Re: HJ45 longterm project.
how much would i expect to pay for a 350? anything i should be looking for in particular when looking for a motor?
i understand there is no disadvantage in having a carburetted engine?
What are the parts that u have that are needed?
Cheers for the info fellas.
