The lawnrover

Post by turoa »

I thought I had better post a thread on my buildup.
Specs are

Land Rover series 2a
Holden 202 EFI
Suffix C gearbox to suffix B transfer case (much lower gearing)
Hilux front axle on Fox Coilovers (hence the project coil rOver)
LandCruiser fullyfloater rear with a hilux centre welded in in a spring under

The front will be a 3 link with panhard. Edit: dont want to have cert issues so have gone with some rangie radius arms
Hopefully there will be an update every night (I am motivated at the moment)
Progress so far.

Took the body panels off
Image

Then I chopped the front crossmember out as a new radiator will be going in to accomodate a larger radiator.
Image

mmm, space
Image

Then the engine came out
Image

Room for a commodore v6 maybe?
Image

The steering box did not want to come out. And I could get the bracket bolts out due to the PO welding the bloody replacement footwell over the old ones and over the bolts. So I chopped it with the 9" grinder. And I HATE grinding aluminium. It gets everywhere.
Image

At the moment I'm pulling everything out of the bulkhead so it can be sandblasted and modified for the cage.

Image

And the messy interior Image

BTW the wiring is all being cut out and I'm rewiring it.

Thats all for tonight, Check back tommorow for more updates.

I want one of those jacks in my garage. But I will have to just put up with axle stands for a while and bottle and trolley jacks.

One day...

Nice work.

little bit of an update. My camera gave up during the week, thats why theres been no updates.

Here is my rear axle partially jigged up to receive the hilux centre.
Image

I have also pressed the radius arm bushes into the arms today (they were dropped off last night) and I made up a tool to do that in the vise (dont have a picture though, and the reason they needed pressing was because the PO had poly bushes in there and he wanted them so he gave me the original rover ones. No pics of that though.

After doing the radius arms, I looked at the hilux housing on the floor and thought hmm, that looks like it needs shavivng. So I started cutting it.
Image
It took 2 cutting discs to do the 2 small cuts. And it wasnt very fast.

So I thought to myself, how do I cut it fast,

PLasma cutter, dont have one.
Jigsaw, na

9" grinder, sounds about right

Took me about a minute to cut the rest of it off. But it still needs a descent grind to get rid of the excess.

Will 6mm plate be strong enough for the bottom?

Finished the shave on the rear axle today.

Checked clearences
Image

Tacked 1st plate in
Image
Then I decided I wanted more clearence so I cut it down and slid it into the housing
Image
Then the second plate in
Image
And then I fully welded it up. I still need to grind it down and paint it. tommorow I start on the rear axle.
Image

BTW the rags are for soaking up the heat so it doesnt warp.

Cool. hopefully Ill have it done within a month. Do I need the backing plates on the font axle, because they look like they're a PITA to clean when mud gets down there.

primo man! ill have to pop over and see it at some stage.

I'll probably be out in the workshop for the next month or so  . So feel free. Ill be in the workshop.

I'm guessing you mean the disk cover  .... and you do and you don't 8) if you want to lose it you need the center ring off the plate as it spaces out a seal.... you'll also need something to mount the end of the flexy brake line
For the books I've removed them on the lemon  but the IFS hub swop moved them outside the wheel and about an inch further from the disk so they were just a nusence

Oh and I'll need the "eye to eye" distance for your drag link so I can cut it and machine in the last thread

De-Ranged, I'll get back to you when I get the box mounted, which will be within the next week. Not many updates today, just ground the bottom of the housing a bit and painted it, and there are no leaks :D . I have decided to go SUA in the rear for the moment and just chop the sh*t out of the guards. Thats so I can enter in F class if I decide to give trialling a go. I may coil it futher down the track though.

hmm, not really much done this weekend.

Got the spring packs done.
I have a theory on that. Im using 4 leafs out of a land rover pack so they are really soft and flat. That means I need to run longer shackles to get to the same height as I am now. And longer shackles = more articulation.

Shaved the front diff. Not really hard. Welded inside and out this time. An cut some of the brackets off.

Started on hilux/landcruiser hybrid rear.
cut up the landcruiser and hilux. Then the 9" grinder broke. So I cant do anything else till we get a new one.

I will upload pics later.

was that 9" a Dynalink one? I had one of those... used to jam disks in it so tight you couldn't get them out... I went through three in about 4 months then got sick of bringing them back so bought a DeWalt which has served faithfully ever since.

Nice looking HUUUGE axle, btw... nice and wide... what does it measure hub to hub?

Not really much done lately. Its been cold in the workshop  . The aim for this weekend is to get the rear axle under with the discs done. And maybe get the front under. Does anyone have any ideas for how to mount my coil over? Or should I ditch them and run with some old coils I have in the workshop.

if you pay $100 for it then the $$$ you save you can keep an eye out for an EFI add on later or save up or something....worth considering....

What about a V6 instead?
