Yup Safari Vibration problem *resolved*

Post by meece4x4 »

Ive searched and searched and searched and still haven't found what im looking for.

started to try and track down the weird vibration in the Saf .. been there since i bought it but is starting to annoy me more and more.

every time I start to steer right (dosnt matter if it's just off center or hard over to the right) under power (light, medium or floored) I get a rubbling vibration though the whole car, varies with speed, lower speeds (up to 70Kph) more noticeable, over 70 not so bad ... 100kph hardly noticeable. varies with weight too, if the truck's loaded up with everyone or if Im towing the zook again not as bad .. really bad when im alone in the truck at 30-50 kph under light throttle, steer right under coasting no vibration :?: :?:

steer left and theres no vibrations at all at any speed??!!????

Tyres are 31's and it does it on both the AT's and the Muddies
the truck has a 2 inch Lift.

have done/replaced
front wheel bearings
lower control arm bushes
radius arm bushes
Front Panhard bushes
king pin bearings
new steering dampener

the above was done to remove the classic Safari Death wobbles at 90 kph.

checked
engine/gearbox mounts (have removed the mounts and eyeballed them for ripps etc.
front hubs (even removed them and took for short drive)

known "faults" ive found,
front driveshaft has a lot of up/down play in the slip joint (maybe thats the clunk/knock under my feet when driving??
and front diff has a fair amount of backlash play
rear swaybar mounts worn and has a little play.

rear diff rotates upwards a little on the radius arms bushes when you rock the truck backwards and forwards.

any Saf geniuses have any ideas?? .. im kinda all out of ideas and the Mrs is getting grumpy with the amount of cash being thrown at various bushes with no resolution to the issue.

Knock under your feet could be loose body mounts?

Have you eliminated driveshaft vibes? Mine improved with new uni's, longer trailing arms, but due to the lift, the spline in the driveshaft still caused minor vibes (was not there straight after the shaft was greased, but soon appeared again.

thought hitting that tree that fixed it  but the problem was back the next day .. body mounts have been checked for tightness, the one under my butt is stuffed i think as i can fell/hear it clunking but that *shouldnt* cause a vibration though the whole truck ..should it :?:

Ball joints ?

How long ago was the lift done, what are the shocks like?

Have you tried rotating the wheels, does that alter things?

not the same issue ... the vibration is NOT in the steering as in I cant feel it though the wheel .. it's more like the entire truck vibrating

No thread about vibrations/wobble on Patrol4x4 is quite the same as mine .. most of them are referring to the death wobble which ive fixed on mine :D

rear drag arm/tierods are good, front drag arm is worn slightly at the drop arm end, have a new adjustable one being made at the moment for next WOF but im at a loss to see how any play in that would cause a vibration when turning one direction only :?: wouldn't it more likely cause vague steering

lift was done before i bought the truck, shocks are "newish" and have been checked for damage and still have lots of resistance when removed and tested on the bench.

Not tires as it does it on both my original Saf offset rims with Savero At's and my Muddies on alloys, for sh*ts and giggles I even stuck my set of 16 inch h/t tires off my Bighorn ..still the same, Tires make no difference to the vib :|

cheers Meatc though, keep the ideas coming ... just in case ive overlooked something basic

tracked the vibration down to the rear swaybar ... the vibration goes away completely when it's removed

now to move onto the next clunk
