tyre reviews

Post by Heath »

Where can we get unbiased reviews on tyres?

Just read another (old 4wd mag) review by a major magazine and the review results are as weak as piss. The tyre that stood out isnt one of their big advertisers so the conclusion is that there isnt a best tyre out there and it depends on you needs.

My pick from their results was the Maxxis bighorn (or was it a Buckshot? :? ) did everythign the BFG KM2 did but wasnt as flash on a steep rocky hill climb and was the noisiest tyre of the lot according to their sound test. But it was awarded 2nd equal with the BFG which costs a shite load more. Not many bothered to submit their tyres this time. I guess the last few comparrisons didnt go in their favour (or they didnt pay enough) so they dont bother and let real life testing prove their worth.

If I read between the lines and compare the comments about wear and tear I would avoid some of the big players...

Maybe we need the AA or Consumer to do some tests that can be replicated for new entrants and the results are then comparable to previous tests. Seems each time Aus4wd do a test its different. Hmmm wonder why.

I'll be buying a cheaper MT if the performance difference between them comes down to the name on the side and thats about it. I was amused to see the Maxxis tyre beat the BFG KM2 in the mud challenge though.

We run Maxxis bighorns on our tow ute and they are very noisy, think they are getting worse as then wear  We need to look at replacing them soon have done 40,000kms on them. We will look for a different brand when we go to replace them.
