Turbo making chattering noise

Hi guys, I have a 1990 2LT Surf and my turbo is making a chattering noise I have no idea what it is, at first I thought the turbo was stuffed so I replaced it with a spare one I had taken off another truck so I knew it was good. After I put it on it worked but still made the sound a bit and just keeps getting worse! It only happens while I am boosting.
Does anyone have any idea what is happening and how I can fix it?

Did you replace the muffler bearings when you had the Turbo off??

They could be getting worn when doing the hard boostings.

If you fit a big BOV and a external waste gate with a screamer pipe it should sort it out though


On a more serious note check:

engine mounts

oil pressure

exhaust mounts

dual mass flywheel

heat shields

Na I didn't replace the bearings all the mounts are good and oil pressure is running normal also can't be the heat shields because I haven't put them back on yet lol. I have no idea what a dual mass flywheel is but I don't think it would be that koz I can hear the noise coming from the turbo.

does it have an external wastegate controler? maybe its failed/spring buggered (whatever) and it's jumping around.

The cheapest place to get new Muffler Bearings from that I have found is here, they also have heaps of there cool hard to find parts!!!!!

Yeah that's about right, mine were stuffed in the Prado, so when I put in the 3 inch exhaust I threw mine out....
Was a bit rougher without them but is a play truck and I can live with it.
