got a new one for my terrano for 350 delivered w warranty.
I wasn't sure if it was worth getting my old one rebuilt, the quotes I got were all over the place so I just took the jump and went with a whole new one.

terrano ones are hard to give quotes on as 9 time out of 10 they are a write off due to them being a fine spline vacuum pump

most places will do free bench testing as its in there best interests they would not be worth dealing with if they did not .

thanks guys awsome feedback so far, i rang Pan Pacific and they are really helpful for a crowd that dont deal with joe public.
got some part numbers and what not , he reckons it will probably just need new brushes cos the alternators themselves are super reliable.

i will take it to warren electrical to get tested first. sounds like you guys like them.

if it was me i'd open it up first and check the brushes, if they are not contacting that is the problem, easy 6 dollar fix, but if they are touching then i'd get it bench tested and get them to confirm its fried

Both of mine had the lovely rotorua sludge threw them at the last W/C. One stopped working during the event, stripped cleaned and all good again. The brushes were jammed solid with crap so lost contact with the armature.

Be worth pulling it down, is what I'm getting at. If it does need new brushes (to worn) get the bearings done to, it'll go for another 20 yrs

i used to have crazy problems with alternators on my 6m supra engine. I planned on high mounting it but eventually started driving in a good deep river after wheeling in the mud, people get stuck in the thought that water kills them and try and keep them dry, i took the opposite approach and used to get it as wet as possible and it was always fine after that. It's the muddy water that stuffs them and the fact that people do silly things like spray crc in them when they dont go and are just full of dry mud, all that does is turn it into cutting paste and stuff it beyond repair when all it needed wasa good dunk and then drying it out on the drive home.

The other thought i once had was to put it on a switch so i could kill all power to it when going it the water or deep mud, it would still be turning and the water would clean out all the mud but the heat of the engine (and speed it turns) would dry it out and then you could flick the power back on to it and avoid blowing the diodes at the back.

Food for thought..

water wont hurt alts my advise is after being in the mud take it home and stick the hose on it leave it running with the hose on for a hour or so wont do it any harm gives it a chance to git all the grit out
