Fitting Extractors

Just wondering what is involved in fitting extractors to a 1992 1.6 Escudo 16valve. Could I do it myself with basic tools, what gaskets (or anything else) are required? Is there anything to watch out for, apart from ensuring I have the correct part for a 16 valve. Thanks.

Hi there, I don't have a 4 cylinder, so my advice is more general purpose for whenever fitting exhaust side manifolds.

* Make sure you CRC the crap out of any nuts you need to undo for a couple of days before trying to actually undo them. Exhaust system nuts are usually corroded to buggery.

* Make sure you have everything you need before you start (Exhaust gasket, coupling gasket, Extractors, tools etc.)

* Make sure you remove all remnants of the old gasket from the engine block before fitting new one. It should be clean and smooth.

* Get a manual (paper or online) so you know all the torque settings and also the order in which things need to be torqued up.

I'm sure there are others on here that have done this and will fill in any special details that I have left out.

i did most of mine myself, and i am by no means an expert. the only thing i didnt do was weld the extractors to the old exhaust.

it was about a year ago so i cant remember all the details, but i dont remember anything being particularly tricky. i agree with kernels comments - every nut was corroded on, and on mine i think most of the studs unscrewed right out instead of the nut coming off.

If you're using new extractors you'll need to weld the exhaust system to them. They don't have a flange on them usually.

But that said mine sounded neat driving it to town to get it welded, dumping out the extractors...

As said above...

But if you can, add the flange to connect extractors to existing exhaust.
Cause if you need to drop the motor or move your exhaust system out the way to do some work..

Then its a hacksaw and re-weld job.

You can get flanges precut with gaskets.

Yep sectional with flanges between is the way to go (my new systm in the prado is 3 bits I think). Then when you upgrade a muffler or pipes get them made sectional too.
