Newbie....Can I just get some advice please :)

Post by flyingboatfish »

Hi I am from Christchurch and Im looking at getting into some 4wd'n plus want something to tow the jet ski and for a bit of hunting.

I was looking at getting a 2.4 TD surf a 1989-1991 era (they are not badly priced) and doing 2" body and 2" spring and throwing on some 33"'s but I am told it won't have the power to spin them etc... (new to this)

Basically I want a capable tow vehicle, that can have a bit of mud fun (nothing serious) . Oh and looks are important... I love the look of a jacked surf :)

Also if you could advise me on other things I would need to consider such as changing diff ratio's etc ... would I need a front locker etc?

Any help would be much appreciated (also some idea on price for the different bits and pieces would be great.. Ive priced out the lift and wheels its just the stuff I might of missed)

Cheers

not trying to ruin your dream or anything mate but if you want to have a good reliable tow vechile i'd possibly stay away from 2lt's.
just not a too good of motor for long hard towing.
maybe look at a 2.8 surf and turbo that? or possibly a 1kz one.

as for playing in the mud getting 33s on one would be easy as. and a 2lt would spin tyres fine I had a 85 lux with 2.4 no turbo and 33x12.5 muds and it did fine

Cheers, my main reason for a 2.4TD is funds... but will see about a 2.8. Would the 2L-t survive towing a jetski across to the coast though... not like towing the weight of a boat or anything.

- Would a surf with a 4" lift be able to run 35"s then?

Also anyone else with some pointers on the diff stuff would be appreciated and other things to consider.

i would'nt reccomend 35s on a IFS surf..... CV damage is a certainty and will suck too much of the life from a 2.4... it will never make it up any hills!

i had a 1991 2lte surf 2" body and 2" springs 33s and it went very well and towed well to lockers in the front help with stopping cv damage but you will away have to replace cv boots nature of the sport . But first thing you do is 3 inch exhaust and the biggest f**ken radiator you can fit in there and run 90% anti boil i was running 14psi boost with the auto so you can stay in the power rang
