AM CB Radios
hey,
just wondering if anyone else has one in their vehicle?
Im thinking of putting one in, just seeing if anyone has any experience with one and how useful they find it etc.

I have one...... but never use it. I have probably used it twice in the last 2 years and that was to listen to trucks on the open road. Youd be way better off putting that money into an incab prs set. they are used way more due to the hand held prs units being so popular.

I have one and only use it on club trips. I also have a prs hand held unit. Limited range but good for close work.
Whats a good PRS unit...?
I have seen these kits on Trade Me but I am unfamilliar with these or CBs in general.

Any pros and cons?

right.. finally a question i can help with.. Spend 3 years selling marine and auto electronics and installing them..
so.
Am CB's. really just a dying art.. yes truck drivers still use them. usually not much good over short distance, and then if the sets not set up just right.. long distance no good either (5km or more)
Prs is the new high frequency equvalient..
Handhelds are between .5 and 2watts in power.. well you can get a 5 watt Icom set but $600 odd is out of most ppls price range.
You generally get what you pay for.. uniden cheapies are ok for the price.
Gme make some good handhelds but are 30-50% more expensive
Fix mount PRS mostly have a high/low power switch. high gives you 5 watts. low is 1 watt. The max power output allowed on the free to air PRS band is 5 watts.
Uniden ones are again cheaper and work fine, but the gme ones are smaller and have better sensitivity..
Icom would be the best to buy but no change from $500ish.
If you know the right people you can buy a fix mount UHF transciever which will operate at 477Mhz they might be nice enough to program one up for you and then you can have 25 watt transmit power.. which is great if you know someone else who has one. i find i can tell everyone in the area code what im doing. but they cant talk back..
that uniden unit on trademe is ok for the coins.. but you could do better if you shop around.

Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..
umm ok you are stuck in the bush somewhere, someone rolls off a bank and you need help, with luck you can contact the marine rescue centre or police SAR etc, the Law allows you to use the police etc frequencies in an emergency.
PRS range sucks, especially in bush over hills (ie not in line of sight), in wet weather and deep foliage...
With this you carry an EPIRB as well to compliment this.

Yeah I see your point but how many people are actually going to buy an E band radio. If you plan on doing trips around the country PRS appears to be the way to go. I live in Welly and am at uni down South so spend about half my year in Dunedin. I have ended up with a CCVC RT which is hopeless apart from when in Welly, an AM CB which is completely useless apart from listening to freight-trucks, and a PRS which is great as my mates and the clubs down here seem to use them a bit as well.
Just my 2 cents, If I was in the market for an all round radio I would 100% go for PRS.
E Band is useless if you have no one to talk to. Yeah sure great for emergencies, and we have all learnt from the last years losses that these DO happen. Im talking about basic intertruck comms.
Cheers, AJ

The CCVC A bands are being looked at to be replaced, the range is good on them but the big problem is supply and reliability, you can't get them and the ones that are in use are 30 years old....
I will be installing a 5w in vehicle PRS as well as an E band possibly, it really depends what we can get supply wise and what the committee approves as the replacement.
PRS is good in close and during recoveries, I have a .5w portable one and its crap, go for the better more expensive ones....
E band is 25w and we can get our own freq to replace the A band one, our radio group is still looking at the options....
Get a PRS

Uniden make a 5 watt handheld http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=90 that is waterproof and rugged for under $500.00, comes with a mount to screw on the dash/bench/console/where ever and you can get a cig lighter to go. Useful both in and out of the vehicle and doesn't matter how much mud is on your hands.
Theres a repeater in Mt Climie, if you want more I will have to ask one of the Radio NERDS on the group looking at the radios...the 10 aierals on their trucks are a dead giveaway
I'm just there with a baseball bat making sure they are doing what they should be doing

ok.. i will set a couple of things straight here.
Im sorry i did miss that Uniden make a 5 watt handheld. if you really want to buy one set to do both.. buy one of these and install a fixed aerial on your vehicle. out of vehicle use its whip, inside vehicle unplug whip and used fixed aerial... works heaps better.
E band is actually about 150mhz which is a VHF (Very high freq). where PRS is 477Mhz which is UHF (Ultra high).
E band frequencys require a liecence to be used and unless you own or rent access to a repeater station for duplex operation you still only have similar range to a prs set.. well simplex range between 5 watt and 25 watt is not that different..
When operating simplex (radio to radio) the most noticable benifit of VHF is that it propogates much better over objects (hills etc) than UHF.
for example, AM (600Hz to 1500Hz) radio travels far further than FM (88Mhz-108Mhz)
Ok.. the PRS sets that have simplex/duplex operation.
as far as im aware (been out of this type of business 2 years) there are no public access repeaters. only way you may get access to one is, you buy a repeater $5000 and up, or you may find one a farmer or similar has bought and installed for their own use.
I sold a few to farmers down south who wanted to be able to buy cheap radios and get range over the hills etc on there property.
other wise you buy a E band or EE band or whatever and rent access to someones repeater, they give you a TONE that means only your group of radios hear your conversation.. you can expect likes of $50 per month.
If any one needs more info or has a question. post here of PM me.
