nissan auto jammed in top gear help please

hi all now i know this is not a 4wd but cant get any usable info out of the boy racer forums and off road express has always been good to me so any auto gurus out there please help!!!!

the story: driving the partners nissan aviner(primera wagon early p10 shape) 1992 sr20de auto pulled up at lights just as i let foot of brake to go i felt a clonk, took off and car very sluggish so put foot to floor and auto would not kick down, put car in nuetral then reverse and every thing works pull into drive,2nd,first any gear but car takes off in top the whole time o/d works as usual so its like the auto is stuck in top. i had a look for a kick down cable but cant find one it looks like its computer controled but i could be wrong. and yes it has plenty of fluid

any help would be great as im stummped and a poor student and so is she

Yeap they are computer controlled.

Drive is the default, limp mode gear. As in no electric signal required from the computer the activate the solinoids to select a fowards gear.

Hard to know what the fault is, could be all sorts, I would start by locating the fuses for the trans and trans computer then depending on your Auto electric skills start tracing the signals from the computer (not sure where its located in a primera but its generally beside/close to the main computer.

If you search google hard enough you should be able to find a factory service manual for the car and it will give you the checks and fault codes (usually based on o/d light flashes).

Or take it to Nissan and get them to chuck their test comp on it to get a definitive answer. Oh and check the shift linkage too but given symptoms I doubt that is the issues.

ok have just solved it myself went and had another look over car and it was the electric kick down that was the problem it had come unpluged thanks
