water profing electrics
Hi guys, Im having a bit of trouble with water at the moment,(i think?). I have a petrol 89 lwb nissan patrol and was giving under the bonnet a bit of a clean, had a fair bit of mud under there after a weekend of fun, as i was cleaning with the hose i was being careful to keep it away from the plugs a dizzy, but must of got a bit in somewhere cause it ran like shit for a while and took a bit to clear. Starts fine now but now after a good run i starts to surge badly at low speeds and also drops a cylinder or two, a mate said it could be water compensating with the heat of the engine and mucking with the spark or what eva. So question being what is the best way to protect the electrics from water, and any theories on the surging would be great too, cheers.
Re: water profing electrics
find a dark place to lift the bonnet and watch for any sparks and tracking. Sounds like you need to give the dizzy cap a clean and maybe a new set of HT leads (thats what the wifes Vitara did years ago - replaced those bits and it was fine.)
Theres a pile of threads on here about waterproofing some where.

cant fix your problem but to help prevent issues in the future this is what i do when washing the engine bay anyway
i have the motor running at fast idle and help keep the motr cool by running a hose over the raidator (at low preasure dont want to stuff the cooling fins ah)
this way if you put a bit of water where it shouldnt be the motor will cough and let you know straight away. then as the motor is still running it helps dry the stray water all up,
this has been working well for me for the last 4 to 5 years so no reason why it wont work for you as well, keep an eye on the raidator and as it heats up and evaporates the water on it just reapply the gentle water hose this keeping the motor nice and cool
just thinking about your problem have you tried crc in the dissy cap and then wiping it clean it could will be water hanging around and condensating creating problems of that kind
good luck
