Future caves trip

Hi all. I am thinking of a future easyish trip to the caves at Napoleons Hill.
Thinking of going upstream in the Waipuna / Nobles Creeks from Waipuna Clarke Rd to the caves, then downstream through Mosdquito Creek to Nobles and back to the start.
Am I on the right track here, so to speak?
I have done Napoleons hill down through the caves and down nobles / waipuna creeks as a club trip a couple of years ago, but my memory is a little rusty.

The following pic shows what im talking about, the red is where i think the caves are, correct me if im wrong, as i remember another club comming in where the blue trail is when we stopped for lunch at the caves.

I'd be up for that Pete, I was on that trip with you in the club and it was fantastic. Hopefully someone else has a good enough knowledge of the area to steer you in the right direction.

Cant recreational 4wd club is the one im in Daz.

Was thinking of doing this as a scenic type of trip over a weekend (Sept?) without too much technical ability required. A sort of 2/3 grade trip.
Will need to invest in some skid/bash plates first tho.

Always up for suggestions / ideas to expand on this tho.

Nope, thats not where the Tunnels are. The tunnels are down stream from the end of the road, you have drawn them in up stream :wink:

I will do a map and post it for ya soon

If the river level is right and you know where to go, its a fun and easy trip down stream to the tunnels!!!!!

If the river is right, you can carry on down stream to the bridge on Waipuna road and get out that way

Talk to Hosehustler Kiwipete as he lead a trip in there with the boys on the weekend. Easy for some hard for others I hear. Going up hill is definitey more fun but frowned upon.

Thanks, I will. Not wanting to go up Napoleons Hill tho, just as far as the caves.

Is that the one who meets at the papanui club?? If it is we were there last Wednesday, I was the one with my little son, and my wife stood up and gave a newbie speech.

easiest way to find the caves is bloody simple, give me a call (i'll PM you my Number) and I will explain it to you on the phone

The farmer at the Nobels Homestead started chargeing $ to pass over to the caves, so now most people just enter the river at the gate, to the right hand side of the bridge( upstream side)repian rights.

i can't recall what road i wnt down

when i done this trip but we went in through ahaura and down to the creek, then through the caves uphill and back out the same road we came in. has anyone done this? from what i tremember it wasn't to challenging but if it was wet going uphill would be fun.

So that means it would be a good two day trip. Is this trip in that sth Isl 4wd tour book? Could be a good trip to do over new year.Sorry for the hijackng. :oops:

The important bit is page 132 - track 21 - Mackley river crossing - walk it and walk it again - set long branchs as targets to skim by - watch for rocks that can hook you up

before then follow the track log from Howard valley Road - overlaid on a topo map -

Yes it is the polymedia one. I have used this since i got my gps, but now am wanting to upgrade, but there are too many option out there, so confused i am.

If you don't have a Mapping GPS - then look at Memory Map - I use it a lot when planning trips etc - plus it does 3d and will work out track profile etc

Cheers Brent, will look at Memory Map topo. Might as well go the whole hog and get N and S islands too.
I use an Etrex Vista for my GPS with one of my re-radiating aerials attached for improved reception. It has an early version of your software on it, but the gps is used mostly just to hook up to the mapping sftware.

howard valley? 1st time i've heard the "Mackely" or commonly called "New Ceek" track called that. as for the river crossing its not that bad - unless the river is up. i've had me motorbike through there a couple of times. the trick is to not cross the river in a direct line from road to road. from wpt-new crk you head hard left upstream then you do 180 so to speak and head back down on the other side of the mackley river to the road at blue duck creek, this avoids a nasty hole.

If you look at Brent Cs trip and photo's , It started at the Howard Valley, then continuaed on to finish at Westport.
