What chassis paint?

Post by mo_sizlac »

Firstly Hello to everyone in the forum!
I'm after some advice for prolonging the life of an old Landy. The chassis is in surprisingly good condition, but the original paint is a bit non existant, so I want to paint it. I've started by wire wool / drill wire brush, and have painted wattyl kill rust on it, now I would like to know what people recommend as a top coat? i've searched some of the previous posts, but no one product seems to stand out.
Any advice much appreciated!

Hi there, welcome aboard. You should put what part of the country your in into your profile which will make it easier for future posts. :D :D
You could use POR15 Or you could use a high quality 2K chassis paint.
Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

The BEST stuff is POR15 can get it in diff colours if you want, ment to put it on bare/cleaned up metal though and its not cheap $60odd a litre, or just any 2k over that rust kill stuff will be ok, then fisholene or cavity wax the inside of the rails to stop them rusting from the inside out.

POR15 Black is the only one that is a rust inhibitor. The other colours are not.

Welcome to the forum mate,

coz you havent asked what the cheapest paint is, if you want to put something good on use the Por15 products, its not cheap at around a hundred bucks a litre though. I've done much the same to my flatdeck chassis but I put Por15 rust preventitive paint on it (the silver stuff) then black Por15 chassis coat as a top coat (the black stuff). You get a really good finish with the chassis coat and it can be put over the top of any primer so you'd be able to use it onto of your wattly rust guard kill

the silver ones sposed to have metal filling or something like that in it thats better at filling up pitting in metal.... like my chassis, its got the rust inhibitor in it, I think its only the finishing coats that dont?

dont get that shit on your skin coz when I was picking it off a couple of days later it tore my skin off and I was left with grazes down my arm :x

Hey thanks for all the fast replies!
POR15 sounds like the one to go for, even tho it's pretty pricey - will have to do some searching for the cheapest stockist - I take it you won't find it at Repco / supercrap?
Got a load of cans of fish oil, think there was a special at supercheap 3 for $15 so that will end up in the chassis. Unfortunately it's a "body on" paint job, so will have a fiddly job with the top of the chassis. Have got some cheap foam pad brush things that might do the job.
I'm in Napier - I can't find where to update the profile with location etc - any pointers?

All the por 15 colours are rust inhibiting but the silver does have the metal filings in it to help with bad rust. Paint guy told me that last time i was at link up. I think you want to use the metal prep stuff done by the same crowd to get the best results.

Its sweet to brush but airing it on in a garage or whatever isn't too good for you. love that iso....

I put mussel barge paint on mine cos I'm a tightass and it came out sweet (yeah freebie). Por15 is even better from what I've seen though. If you got the money do it.
