Hi all, need some advice on buying a 4WD so thought I'd sign up here and get ask the experts. Looking at getting something to get me up the mountains next winter for snowboarding and really just to get out of the city to get in to a bit of hunting. Havn't had much to do with 4WD's apart from my time spent in the Army driving Landrovers in Tekapo. I'm leaning towards a Landcrusier and would perfer deisel. So any advice for first time buyer would be great, budgets pretty low really 5-6 grand. Belows a link to something I've got on my watchlist on trademe just to give example of the sort of thing I'm looking at. Cheers all look forward to picking up some good knowledge form ya forums.ez now

welcome to ORE mate. You should stick your location in your profile.
That budget should give you a pretty big choice, I'd say a Landcruiser or Safari would be a good way to go if you want diesel.
That little 70 looks good, tyres are a bit cut up and worn out but other than that it looks a decent buy. The 3B is a great engine and really just run in at 200ks as long as it's been well maintained.
Happy shopping!

Cheers Mongoose, how much would a good set of new tyres set me back? How much do you reckon those ones on that 70 have left in them, pass another WOF?

I'd say they'd get a warrant, they're just past it for gripping really well in the mud. For what you are saying you are getting the truck for you probably don't need to worry.
I just got a new set of 33" mud tyres for a grand, they're ok, nothing special. A good set will set you back more like 1500-2000 but good tyres are a good investment the first time you hit some deep sticky mud.

also make sure you check both underside silk for any major damage as i believe that cause a car to fair WOF. if you keen on that , make sure u check and that al lthe 4wd system works and when u select the 4wd that it goes in smoothly. One thing i would consider is the non power steering on that truck. Would be interesting to see what its like at tight spot when u need to use ur muscle.
good luck

Cheers guys, yea not to worried bout no power stearing, kind of use to that with the old army landrovers. I'll be using it mainly to get up the mountain and just to get out of the city. Now just waiting on the seller of that 70 to get back to me....
