What trans?!

Post by chevrolux »

Got a 1990 Surf. It's got a 3y-e and is just stupid slow. Gets used 90% on road and then when it gets put in 4x4 its go up the odd muddy hunting track etc. So i figure fcuk it, pull out the 3y and put a lexus in. I realise this is gonna stress the front end out quite a bit more but when i blow a CV will just cut it all off and do a SAS. Until then it stays as an unmolested surf.
The problem im having is what's the easiest option trans wise. Currently it's an A340H. Cant find much on using that trans.
Did a quick search on here and the A343f is one that keeps popping up. But being a noob to this wasnt quite sure. People say all you do is swap out the input shaft from a lexus trans and in to the a343f as the standard shaft is too long. Thats fine. But if it's to long why not cut it shorter? If it has to be swapped thats fine (got a mate who works at a trans shop) but want to do as much of this myself. The next thing is people were saying you have to swap the 'pump' over. What pump is this?!?
Next thing after that is wiring? Heard there are a few that can set them up to be shifted manaully which sounds cool. Thoughts on that?
I can get the engine all bolted in and sitting there looking nice but thats when i get stuck. So please fire all your opinions at me =)

Im no expert but the A343F is for a diesel & they made other versions for diff engines (petrol).... they have different internals

Such as
: Over-drive piston stroke
: Accumulator Spring

Probably others too

Yea been trolling lextreme and found a surf forum as well that was quite helpful. The main thing i want is to keep the interior as stock as possible. Might just say fcuk it and use a w55 or r150. Cheers for the replies. Now just wait for the build thread....

Oil pump and input shaft are peice of piss to change. 6 bolts and it just pulls out and swap it with the lexus one. Or you can take the tailhousing off the lexus auto, shorten the output shaft (angle grinder does the trick) and bolt that shit up. Probably a better option as then the 1uz harness plugs right in. Just be aware that if you want the lexus engine management to control the computer you will have to adapt up the 4 prong pickup in the rear of the trans as the standard ones are 3 prong I think

So your saying use the standard lexus trans (from the soarer/sc400) pull off the tail housing. Shorten up the shaft and whack on the surf transfer? And the 4 prong thing? Thats the speed sensor right? read a lil about that. Think i should be able to figure that out. Sounds easy =D

FYI, the A340H has an auto reduction box.

sort of like and extra set of planetary gears for low ratio,

means changing low to high to low on the go.

2 speed reverse is also interesting although i think its pretty hard on the trans.

Manualising the standard auto is also a simple task,
advantages of which can be a manual torque converter lockup.

I manualised my V6 box when i repowered my surf with a 2JZ

the lexus auto i looked at bolting into the prado did not have the oil port, the one shown in the photo does, so perhaps there are different versions of that auto.
