Saving the whale

Post by bobrocket »

My mission that started last year - Now that I've figured the photo thing

After convincing the wife I need a new car, I was offered a really cheap GQ destined for the wreckers, It had done the rounds and apparently needed severe $$$ thrown at it for rust repairs + some minor fixes for a WoF.

---Insert tui ad ---

Some grinding + practice wielding from UBZ, we managed to save the roof, luckily we had no cutting disks or it could of become a ute

Image
Image

There were lots of little things that needed doing but the guy thought it was a right off because of the rust, took it back after the weekend (3 days later) - one of those happy moments. - safari with WoF

Then it begins........
Rear Gaurd Chop
Image
Image
Extractors - Hmm..........Brought them off T/me nice and cheap but was a premature impulse thing, they had been made on the truck and removed while still attached to the motor, so now I had cool extracters that don't fit - I only figured this after many hours of trial and error, after a little chop I quickly figured that the pto shaft was in the way so once again busting out the grinder, had some bends put in and happy again
Image
So then the alternater starts leaking oil, this completely stumped me?????? I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure this just aint right. Out it comes, pull it apart, figure it out, completly fark it then send it in for repairs, this is about the time I got myself a manual........

Add snorkel, tyres and a 2inch lift and then its time for a holiday,
off to the far north to introduce the wife to car camping.
Image
And how to use the winch? sort of...
Image
Then someone explained to the wife that if she was a bit nervious she should get out and take photo's, because every boy likes cool photo's of his truck - except for some reason I seem to have lots of photo's of Deiselboy's cruiser.
Image
Jumping a whale :( That cost me a shock and an axel seal,
How not to change an axel seal, bash a screw into the seal so you have something to pull on, great idea untill someone knocks the screw down the axel, into the diff, we could feel the screw on the inside by putting a finger in the drain hole, yes there's a lip on the inside, after "a while" it came out, haha then we realised the seal was the wrong size but quickly fixed.

On comes the bar work, best thing for rear bars? after looking at tube options I decided on 5mm channel steel, something nice and solid. it kind of gives it a nice symmetrical look with a touch of anger.
Then there's the trick of learning how to wield?, After doing lots and lots of grinding it seemed to get better, faster.
Image
Off to woodhill for a play, go the navi...........He thought we were going for a hoon up the beach :D
Image
Image
$50 at wash world + hours of cleaning sand set like concrete, it's like a one night stand ending up with twins?

Custom diff breathers, cost about $30 for hose and fittings and the filters were $10 each at super cheap
Image
Image
All it needs is a bit of plate to mount the filters to make it look pretty.
Brought some bullbars off trade me, they had been damaged but solved the problem of more steel on an already heavy whale, a couple of plates to lift the bars to match the body lift, chop, chop, grind to fit the winch,

the next plan is to move the winch back and up, but havn't quite got that figured out yet.

The plan was for a capable touring type wagon, something good off road but also usable to drive everyday.
A lot of my off road stuff is done through work, access to sites etc....work trucks are great, sometimes if we're lucky we even get a rental :D

Was for a bit, time seems to harder to find, to get away these days so its been mainly day trips, local play spots, got a sneaky overnight planned soon so hopefully that pans out.

Good stuff

It is a lot more satisfying when you do the work yourself instead of just having a cheque book and paying others to do it.

Well done

Yep. But not everyone is lucky enough to know what to do aye.
Nothing wrong with employing people to do the work? That's how some people make a living. It puts food on their table Richard.

But yeah, well done.

Finally got around to making a mount for the filters (diff breathers), something to cross off the list.
Image
Also made a mesh cover for my snorkel, Its amazing how many bees, wasps, bits of gorse......etc get sucked in. Just used the mesh from a sieve I found in the kitchen, a bit of rubber tape, I thought it was a nice $2 fix.
Image
Started making brackets to give the rear bar a lift to match the body, I'm thinking it might look a bit funny so been toying with ideas for some sort of cap over the chassis, dunno yet? see what happens after a few tins of brain juice.

Also after a few random bits, thought I might get lucky here,
tried a few wreckers but they don't seem to be interested in dealing with small stuff like this

The window squirter things on the bonnet x 1
A front passenger side monsoon,
A tacho sender,

Cheers in advance

They can be adjusted. Use a welding torch tip cleaner, poke it down the hole and use it to aim the jet at the right place....or.....
