Replacing glow plugs?

Post by Euc »

Hi Everyone

I'm a newbie to the 4wd game. I own a 1990 Surf SR with a 2.8d under the bonnet. She's having a bit of trouble starting when cold but no problems when warm. I was thinking this may be a glow plug problem. Is it hard to replace these? How would I go about it?

Cheers

Firstly is it a 2.8 or a 2.4?
Not that there is much difference when it comes to changing the plugs, it is just that if ya had a 2.8 then I'd be jealous as hell.!!
Where abouts are ya located.
They are fairly easy to do.
If you are handy to the 'Shore then I could give ya a hand with them if ya like.
The most important thing is the insulators between the glow"bar" and the mounting post.
I'll have a fish about and get back with some web links soon.
Cheers and Beers
Simon.

Its a 2.8 non turbo. I haven't seen any other SR models around. I think it stands for Simply Really as it doesn't have electric windows or even a rear window wiiper. I guess thats less things to go wrong.
Im down in the Turangi at the southern end of Lake Taupo otherwise I would take you up on your offer of a hand.
Pinky has sent me a couple of pages from a maual and I spoke to him on the phone so I've got a good idea and think I'll give it a go in the weekend.

Pretty easy job, if you can change a spark plug then you won't have any problems :D

Hmmm.... Sounds more like the NZ Spec 4Runner to me. Does it have chrome or Black bumpers?
I know that the surfs come out in more specifications than you can imagine, and that the letters on the back do not always relate to the actual spec of the truck.
Mine is a SSR Ltd
A mate of mine has the same year and letters but no lecky sunroof.

I thought it looked similar to the Fourunner. It does have black bumpers but is registered as a Surf.
I replaced my glow plugs during the weeknd but unfortunately still having starting problems. Thought perhaps its a fuel pump problem as it takes alot of cranking to get started but once started it has no problem starting again. But if left for a day or two without starting have to crank it for a long time again. Could the fuel pump be losing its prime? Is this a mater of seals or possible leaks in the hoses?

hi ecu . start by checking the hold back valve on the return line of the injector pump the best way to do this is to remove it from the pump and check if there is any foreign material lodged in side the valve if there is no sign if foreign material you will have to go deeper will talk later have to go as tea is ready . right had tea back to the job inhand it sounds like you have a low fuel pressure fault so what might be happening is that your injector pump is NOT holding line pressure you need to first check the hold back valve then check for any fuel leaks at all the fuel lines +fuel filter +hand primer + fuel pump . so you know the hold back valve is on top of the injector pump and it will have a ballbearing in the middle of the fitting also if you trace the fuel return line from the No .1 injector :) :) :) back to the valve you should find it if you want to i will e-mail all the trouble shooting steps with pics to you good luck have fun and go MAD talk to you later
