well I got some 2mm/2.5mm galv sheet and zipped a small peice around the roll bar, then cut the shape out of a bigger peice, folded the edge 90 deg then zipped that on.
Took ages to come up with a plan but from what I've done it's not too bad. . You can tell along the top where the FRP top sits that it's not a good as I'd of liked it to be.. a bit wavey but I've a plan so i'll see what happens.
I decided to go the way I have due to wanting the longer wheel base.. the 70 is just too short, and the 80 chassis has way more flex standard than mine has modded and the ride.. oh will be so sweet..
If any of you have heard of Donald Preston.. well my truck will be very similar to his with one fundamental difference.. he used the 70 chassis and grafted the 80 gear onto it and me well i'm using the standard 80 chassis and grafted the body onto that..As it turns out its a bit of a coincidence really.. only seen his truck on trademe.. and I'd started mine before I'd seen his..I fugure keeping as much gear standard is a good idea for repairs later on..etc..
Only had to fab up 2 mounts each side for the body as 1 80 mount was just about spot on and used it..

Cheers

Sweet project man!

CRS make nice stuff. Too bad they never responded to my emails. I ended up being taught by Brian Howat how to make my own adapters so I didnt really loose

Was it a mission to modify the body mounts to fit the 70 series cab? The 80 series chassis has always appealed to me to chuck on a 40 or 70 series body

Wasn''t too bad.. I have the front mounts to make up yet but for alignment, they match almost perfectly central.. just a bit off side due to 70 chassis being that much smaller.. but otherwise it'll be pretty easy to make up.
Cheers for comments too  we'll see how it turns out in the end.. cheers

Just picked up some steel..
2 x 65 x 35 for deck
1 x 32 for back stays
1 x 40 for main hope.
Already have 50 x 25 for intermediates on deck..
Now just gotta find a bender..? Then that will be the back sorted.. Will post up some pics as it happens if I remember..lol

Well I thought Id better post up a update.
Almost completed the deck, Made up indicator bits and bobs, run the edges so kwila decking can bolt to it, Was going to install a air tank that I have had for ages BUT it's operating pressure is only 135 psi , test pressure is 195 psi and I have a off psi switch at 160 psi..!! :?: should I use it? was sort of going to use it to run the lockers when I get them.. etc.. 50 ltr tank is a bit and also could run a rattle gun too  Pic to follow later
Cheers

Well I tried to keep everything on the first post BUT i have so much info it didn't like that :( SO i'm going to post up as normal..
First post 1- 13 are on the first post.. The rest will follow this post. trying to keep it simple barry..

Anyway UPDATE time..
Over the weekend I installed the lex into the chassis.. What a drama.. Vacuum 4wd had to be removed so it would fit the PTO as well..
Then when I took it off the thrust washer had self destructed on me.. So I had to rebuild it  took hours.. And as it turned out I had a manual 4wd transfer on my bench so it took it's place. It now fits like a dream.. And the PTO will too.
Here is the old xfer..
Image
and
Image
The thrust washers had started to wear down the alloy.. so was glad I caught when I did.. :)
I had to remove those so I could put this on..Image
So it would fit in between the chassis rails..Once I had rebuilt it I then started on engine mounts and xfar mounts..
Here is the engine in
Image
Sorry for poor pic..
There is not much room behind it..
Image
You can just sort of see the mount holding it up here
Image
And here is the Xfer mount that I did.. had no choice really.. Thanks to Bruce for pointing this out as I was totally stumped on what I was going to do here.
Image
Once I cleaned up the garage of all the crap on the floor.. :D I thought I'd chuck some tahs on it and see how it looked..  Well lets just say I'm very impressed as to how the height is on 31's with all but the drive shafts and front panels on..
Image
It is sitting as high as my 70 with NO engine in on 33's and the new truck is the same hieght to the door with 31's on..  I can only imagine how high it'll be with 33's or 35's.. gawd..
Front view on engine in
Image

Only thing that I might have to change or mod is my sump is a rear and I either have to cut some of the alloy out of the way to allow for travel so the 3rd doesn't hit the sump OR maybe get a front sump and see how that sits..
Everything is sitting nice and high outta harms way.. so far i'm pretty happy with it..
Cheers K

Ive got a front sump version in mine. Still had to cut a bit off the side to clear the drive shaft. The rear sump one you have is probly better for oil pickup when your pointing up hill too

Well I dropped out the front springs last night and all I need is about 25 mm and the bump stops should work. As it stands, it just rests on the bump stops and hits the top part of the sump. All I need is the compression of them so 25mm might not be enough.. But I might lift the engine 10 mm as well.. spring lift and all good.
But basiclly the scollap I did from the 70 is working out perfect, only the very top bit is hitting the sump.. Just needs a little fudge factor..

Well bit of a update.. nothing really.. Ran the existing 80 fuel lines today and fixed up the front brake line around the engine mount..
Put on the stock headers.. and heat sheilds.. but cannot go much further until I get ma goodies from Jase.. Once I have those then I can make sure I don't have to yank the mota again and it can be completed..

THINGS TO DO

Drive shafts.. front can be cut down and rear .. well I gota find one those.FRONT DONE
Once fuel filler line is in then I can screw deck down.DONE
Electrical wiring to get a start on.STARTED
Lower front bump stops and give it a lift.. 30-50mm to clear engine sump.DONE
Cut inner gaurds and paint the front panels and bolt on.DONE
Bonet to paint and front fascia panel FRONT DONE
Shift the seats to outter edges more so the handbrake lever will work properly.HAND BRAKE DONE
Get winch fixed and mount.DONE
More bar work around the front and sides for protection..DONE
Even more bar work for removable exo top side.
Tahs.. x2 sets.. set for club stuff and another for comping in.ONE SET DONE
Thinking of mounting another set of shockies to the front..for some double action.MAYBE GOING TO HAPPEN
Lockers.. well I have to wait for those..lol. Front and rear.
Make up exhaust.
Get engine running and test.DONE
Fudge the inside gear stick boots etc and levers to make sure they run properly.DONE
Make water proof.. LOL
Cert and rego etc..

If I've forgottening anything... no doubt I'll remember later..

Cheers K

Well update time..
I got the levers from Jase and because they were off a 40-45 maybe the g/box pivot wasn't in the correct position.. so i made this
Image
and tweeked the main lever a little, worked a treat and got this
Image
While I was pondering things I picked up some fuel filler piping and got that sorted..
Image
and
Image
So now I can fill the tank and test run it..Might even do the electrics to the mota to make sure it'll work properly..
Hopefully this weekend I can make up the front end mounts and get that bolted on.. then paint it.. If I can find a drive shaft 1300mm long then bolt that on and take it for a spin..lol  .
Deck is just about to be screwed down so I'll get the last few things done before I do that.

Had a clean up in my garage.. and thought I'd chuck the deck on..
Image
Just a couple things to do and it's finished..
All screwed down with spare wheel area cut out.
Image
Just need to make a wheel holder for the spare..Then the rear is complete.. bar electrical
Now to start the front end.. Had unbolted it last weekend and most of the bolts were in fact loose or gone  so when I get it bolted up I'm thinking of bolting it together with some locktite.. that should see it through to not coming apart..lol
cheers k

Thanks Sawdoc, Bit of an update.. not much done today..was hoping to make front mount as well but haven't got around to it yet..
Anyway made up the bumpstop spacer to allow for full compression for the front driveshaft to miss the sump. :D
It's 75mm tubing with 5 or 6 mm plate welded on top and bottom, ground down smooth and some lipstick on them. Not too bad really and it'll take a hell of a lot of pounding to collapse those fawkers.. hehe  Just need a 2-3" lift I'm thinking to balance the front end to the back.
Image
Might get onto body mount now and at least make a start..
More later..cheers K

Well today I got the front mounts done to the chassis and front driveshaft bolted up ( what I farking drama..)
DRIVESHAFT - had to redo a UJ , once done I then had to drill out to the right size hole for the bolts, then bolted it up only to find the middle bearing when I tried to add grease, leaked into the middle of the cardin joint.. Dissasemled to fix.. ended up having to weld the bung up.... re-assembled it and bolted it up.. only to find the slip join was leaking too when I tried to re grease it..-farked around with that for a couple hours only to dissasemble that so I could weld up the bung on that too.. :x :x I then re assembled it and bolted it up.. Worked out awesome.. Had to make a minor adjustment to the x member..
Image
You can't quite tell but I ground out where the cardin joint is and welded in a peice of pipe to give it more clearence when at full droop..
While I had the cheap arrrse welder going I fabbed up the front mounts for the body panels..Ended up useing the original front mounts off the 80 as they were exactly centre BUT offset by about 30-40mm so ended up cutting some old mounts down and zipped them to some 6mm plate, then attached to the front mount on the chassis.
Image
and
Image
Now all I need to do is rub it down fix a little rust holes here and there, Paint it then bolt back on..
happy days..
Still waiting for some 12mm cap screws and some rivnuts (from Blacks)so I can then finally attach the x member..I'm going to use 4 each side as that is what was holding it up in the first place. The rivnuts are totally under shear so I then I won't have any problems.. Time will tell..

Well been busy as a beaver today..
Stripped the front off and gave it a sand and repair, then some lipstick..lol
Image
and inside
Image
I wanted the inside white as well so it's easy to see things when you have to repair or mod things..Both sides are done 8)

These turned up today as well.. bloody big.. 12mm x 30mm cap screws yealding 12.6 grade (i think), I'll need to drill a 16mm hole in the chassis just to get them to seat properly...
Image
Well thats it for this week unless I get some time off..LOL
Till laterzzz.. cheers
