Post by cleadus1 »

anyone know much about lj78 transfer cases?
mine started making horrible screaching noises and the odd popping /clunking sounds, it seams to only do it in high ratio low isnt too bad (thats in 2wd havnt tried it in 4wd) what should i be looking at?

cheers

the transfer cases are the same as normal 70 cruiser ones, coxsy is referring to the weak prado centre diff locks in the 90's not the 70's
70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)

The Older Prado has a transfer case like the bigger 70 series like Jerry says.
Good strong gear driven... Only differance is a slight differance in ratios..

Are you still running the electric hubs?

With the hubs out / off and not in 4WD (Hi4 or low) the front drive shaft should turn freely.

if in 2wd you can't turn front driveshaft with ur hand (assuming the transfer is in 2wd) I'd say one of your hubs is locked in lock? my kzj78 did this but I run a locked front diff so I'm also thinking if you have a open front diff it may be both hubs? or wouldn't the shaft still spin freely by slipping to the one free hub if only one was locked..?

now iv confused myself

and as for the noise when mine had slicked front hub and with wheel rotation would go back up through driveshaft it made a nasty noise once at top of 3rd and in 4th gear, I guessed just too much load for it as when my 4wd and hubs were sweet again it was gone.
