Terrano problems
Hi All,
I have a few annoying issues with my terrano 1991 2.7TD Auto
First is the annoying auto lockup. It loves to stay in "5th" when I put my foot down approaching a hill. No matter what trans mode it is in, turning overdrive off just makes it ring its nuts out.
I have run the diagnostics and am getting no error code so I assume it is a factory flaw?
I have seen this post for making the lockup more controllable:

Has anyone done this mod?and any pros and cons?
Second is the rev gauge works when you start up and occasionally changes when you are driving but only to another fixed position.
Any ideas?
Third issue is when you rev the motor from idle it seems to take ages for you to hear the motor (as revgauge) to return to idle revs, about 10 seconds.
In traffic the truck surges with no gas pedel every now and then if that is related.
Basically the truck is dead stock so any help on things to remove or watch out for outside of general servicing would be much appreciated.

sometimes it can be overlooked, but I think the Terranos have another switch whick holds the trans in gear
check for that button

The rev counter thing isn't just the needle drooping and dragging on the dial surface is it? The needles on the older terranos seem to be made out of shit that bends when it gets hot.
You can bend them back if you're careful, take the steering wheel surround off, unscrew the plastic cluster surround and remove and then take the plastic front off the cluster

Something so simple, gave it a bend and seems to have done the trick. Thank you

For the trans, I tried in all modes and seems that it still does the same thing with overdrive on and about 85km/h you put your foot flat on a hill and it stays in the somewhat 5th gear. It blows out a bit of black smoke and slowly gets hotter.
Any other auto terrano owners with the same problem or had teh problem?

My work partner went through the same thing,
There is a temp sender buried deep inside, that tells when it is hot and cold (apparently they don't lock up till they are warm),
you have to reset fault code and find the wires and put a resistor in. There is a voltage range where everythings goes sweet. I don't have all the info, but i'm sure someone will.

I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

My terrano does the same thing!! be interesting to see if the resistor thing works! might give it a try this weekend, also my old mans terrano does the same rev surge thing? id be interested to see if any one has any ideas

For the surgeing check the filter in the injector pump to find look under the power sterring pump.
You should see a 17mm bolt remove it BECAREFUL it has copper washers on both sides.
Move the pipe to one side useing a bic pen push it in the hole you should have a small spring on the end of it.
Do the same thing again with the pen and you should come up with a small filter about the size of the tip of little finger this could be all gunked up.
Give it a clean up and see how it goes.
Put it all back together oh dont forget to aneel the copper washers so they reset diesel proof or get new ones.

The mod is awesome, DO IT!!!!!
Used in conjunction with the hold switch, its much better up the hills


The idle one is odd. My brothers Mistral (same motor) was doing something similar. Will ask what the fix was

I've unplugged the kickdown switch, but the lockup switch still plays tricks on the computer. It seems that if its unlocked for too long then it wont lock up again and needs to be reset?

Hi, been running with the switch for a couple of days now and say do it if you have not already.
I useually leave teh switch on and turn it off for when I just need to,then right back on again. So no issues for me yet, probably more so how you use it.

I take it you are talking about the torque convertor lock up. This does not lock up all that often when operating correctly, mainly when cruising at consistant speed/revs. Running it locked up most of the time will burn out the convertor and ruin your box. If it was slack and not working right I would have started with oil change (fully pumped) and new filter then looked at other repair options, stuff you are doing is just hidinmg the symptoms not fixing the problem.
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

My Teranno TD27 used to work great. As you say, lock up would not happen until the eng/trans was completely warm. However, over a period of time, the lock up seemed to work a bit less often and now won't work at all. I do understand that I might have an actual transmission problem (big$$
) but want to investigate a few things first. Does anyone have any experience with this problem?

Would it be possible to put the lockup switch in the wires to the temperature sender, instead of to the lockup solenoid itself?
Im thinking of this to try and get around the tcu not engaging lockup after a while with it unlocked. If that makes sense.

Hey thanks for your help guys. I will try the resistor mod and hope that allows me to get lock up. From there, assuming it works, I'll rig up the switch so I can select whether ZI allow it to lock up or prevent lock up.
