Hilux axles into Vitara

Post by Rangielux »

Putting Lux axles under a Vitara at the moment (over the next couple of months). It was a project started by someone else then on-sold to a mate of mine. The guy that started it had little idea :? (thats polite for No idea). So remounting the front axle at the mo.

Question i've got is any ideas how to (easily) convert from a slip joint on the tranfer case output shaft (standard Vit has a fixed lenght d/shafts both ends) - to a driveshaft slip joint using probably lux shafts:?:

I used Lux axles, modified to length, then machined up adaptors to bolt to the Isuzu flanges, with Hilux flange faces on the other end. They bolt to the flange usnig coutersunk capscrews then have threaded holes for the lux axle to bolt to...

Warning: use locktite... I nearly lost my front one... :) Found it after the slipjoint 'fell off' in that failed ascent video that Rik so kindly shared with the world all 4 bolts on the shaft were loose.

Machine the vitara spline off the shaft and attach the spline to a hilux propshaft flange. Fit a coil spring in a Hilux slip joint so that it is always extended. This holds the vitara spline in the T/C. I haven't tryed this but have read of it

In my Paj I already had the T/C in bits for deeper reduction gears so I had the front output shaft driled to take a 10mm bolt to retain the splined flange.

Yes that sounds like a good answer , thanks

Steve, I think you may have misunderstood my dilemma, you see Vits dont have any output flanges on the transfer case. Wish they did - it would make life much easier :(

Front axle is pretty much done - pics later. trying to put the finishing touches on the rear now (Discs etc)

Question?
Threw some longer rear shocks in the back to get a bit more ramp and of course the springs fall out when ramped  . Whats the sneakiest way to keep them in - No.8 wire ? :) (its a no wof club truck), they have spacers already also. Besides longer coils, any ideas

Some range rovers I have seen have the base of the spring captured (wired) and have a cone style locator (pointy hat missing part of the point) to relocate the top of the spring on compression into a short round tube atached to the spring top plate as a guide for the spring to return home.

Means you dont loose the droop I am no expert but hope you can work out what I am trying to say.

I cant draw pictures either :)

This is th kit I have in my 90

The spring relocates nicely each time
I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to fab something like this to fit

Falling out ?? dose that mean missing the spring seat at the top ?? or out all together ?? :?
If its out alltogether then you need some tabs on the axle to bolt em in place then for the top try this not as fancy as furgus's set up.... (Hey Furgus I thought your 90 was legal ?? please tell me you've found away to let us all play like this.... my RR would love to be able to do this  )
Anyway here's a simple spring locator to build

A bit of tube the size of the inside of the spring a bit of plate :D :D

It's all fully road legal & certed - only proviso was that the "check straps" are attached for on highway driving. They are actually there so you can use a HiLift jack to change the tyre (otherwise you'd need one hell of a long HiLift)

Oh & Deranged I love the way you did yours & I can't how that wouldn't be legal (assuming piccie that is your truck - I thought you had a Rangie not a disco??)

  caught out stole the pic from another site some time back... I haven't done the Rangie yet (not enough time for the lemon let alone my real project  also I was told the spring couldn't come loose at the top... so instead of doing the simple thing with a locator I was working on dual coils, the standard and a very light weight one that connects standard to the spring perch .... but was having a few problems  might just go and have another word with my certifier 8) now

Thanks guys :) . Yeah, I can make up something similar to that. Obviously fixing the spring to the axle is the accepted way.

It should only take a small mod to fix, cause when I went up yesterday to do a bit more work on it, it was covered head to toe in sht  . On Sunday my mate couldn't resist it and took it for a "test run" around his fairly hilly farm for 1.5hrs and the springs stayed in - just. He's real happy with the way it went too :D . May have to lower the diff ratios in the future tho.

vitara rear shocks

Post by spanky »

just been looking at the vitara you did, it looks real good. what did you get the longer rear shocks out of ?. i have changed my mind about doing same as scored a surf chassis that will chop off in front of back axle mounts and weld onto front half of mid 80s hilux chassis i have, then make front coils, going to make own susp sort of like the trial guys do but strong enough to go up bush with few bourbons and thrash the shit out of it !. just not to sure what motor yet . when i start i will put photos on once i figure that out .in mean time i will carry on beating the vitara, need to get a few people keen on 42 traverse when opens again in nov cheers

Got the rear shocks out of a early model Holden Vectra (rear), with a couple of small adjustments they work good with spacers on the rear coils for extra travel (they have to be tied in at the bottom tho). Any one got any good front coil overs lying around ? I,ve got the front suspension up & running ok but it needs some coil overs with abit more travel :?
Just finished the front bar and winch mount complete with a Husky 10,000lb on it  - will try and get a pic of it soon.

You wont go far wrong with the Hilux chassis spanky :) dont forget to get the fuel tank out of the way at the same time.
