Generally speaking:
4H = 4wd high range, ie normal 1st,2nd,3rd etc gears but in 4wd mode.
2H = 2wd high range ie normal 1st,2nd,3rd etc gears but in 2wd mode.
4L = 4wd low range. ie really slow 1st,2nd,3rd etc in 4wd
there will not be a 2L because low range should always be engaged in 4wd
now the 4HLc I'm guessing its fulltime 4wd and the centre diff is locked(if fulltime 4wd)? and same when in low range, although I would have presumed that centre diff is locked when in low range anyway. I'm just stabbing in the dark as I've never set foot in the front of a nissan before
If you had bought a landrover or a surf then I could help

While on the subject
Can somebody please explain about diff locks. Mine has a Auto diff lock and I think I know but have had trouble explaining to a friend when asked about a guy we were watching locking his hubs

Hi Bubba,
All you'll ever need to know about diff locks right here http://www.greatbasinrovers.com/diffsinfo.html
Automatic ones are described about halfway down the page.

Diff talk

I must say that is nice to be able to ask dump ass questions in a non-judgemental place such as this :afro:
