Best place to buy stuff.

Well I need to replace a few things and was wondering where the best place is to get them.

1: Front and rear drive-shafts oil seals on the transfer-case.
2:carb kit
3: Right CV (I can probably rebuild it myself)
4:Distributor cap

I am think for 1,2 and 4 it will be best to go to Suzuki? or is there better places? and where do i get new CV's from? or is it better to remove it and get someone else to fix it?

driveshaft seals go OEM from suzuki if you dont know the part your after (if it has SKF on the seal, get it from skf)
could try BNT (bearings n transmissions) but my experience with them has been huuuuuge markups ($315+gst for an SKF bearing kit, next phone number i dialed was SKF and they quoted $110 inc gst for exactly the same kit)

carb kit - carbeurator shop in hamilton (if its still open?) cheap as chips...

c.v. - shop around it will vary considerably but from suzuki will probably be the most expensive option... try trademe and/or wreckers?

dizzy cap supercheap auto or repco probably cheapest, easiest and fastest..

Oh and I know about how BNT over charges, I only get stuff from them If I can get it through a mate who works there. Otherwise its just not worth it.

yeah, dealerships can be just as bad tho... a while ago the temp gauge in my van puckered out, so i took it to an auto sparky, he said sender is buggered so i said get a new one then, being a lazy bastard he went straight to mazda dealership, $100 just for the tiny brass sender and then it turns out the gauge is poked, sender was fine... but he made me pay for the sender anyway coz mazda wouldnt take it back (whos fault was it again?) a month later i get one of those temp gauge and sender kits from repco for my truck ($26 for sender, gauge, mounting bracket etc) and just for shits n giggles i tested the resistance between dead cold, good running temperature and boiling point between the OEM mazda one, and the repco one.. absolutely identical... (sitting in the same cup of water) and the repco one even comes with an (imperial?) thread adaptor

Moral of the story - shop around, dont rely on what anyone else has to say (alltho its bloody marvelous having a medium such as this forum to bounce ideas off other people and gather info from their experiences!)

I've allways used Saeco/ Precision for bearings and seals.
Or Bearing Supplies [nz] Ltd,in Henderson.
Or try suzistore.com.au for genuine Suzuki seals and heaps of genuine bits for a good price
Wreaker or tardme for a CV

the statement "and have never been overcharged" implies you tried ALL other options to know whether you were or were not overcharged

It all comes down to personal experience, to me a mark-up of 200% is beyond a joke, but nobody forces me to shop there (thankfully)

I dont think there is much of a comparison between bnt and super/repco - they cater to quite different areas of the market..

the latter is the quickest, easiest, most readily available and usually cheapest source for things like oil, filters, spark plugs and leads, dizzy caps, rotors - basic consumable stuff....

I dont know exactly what bnt is good for, they just sell stuff you can get directly from suppliers for 1/3rd the price?

I have found often it is cheaper to go ex-akl or even ex japan/usa/uk/aus and pay the freight rather than somewhere local....

I did say try bnt tho an O ring is not likely to cost alot so the time spent trying to find the cheapest one to save 5 or 10 bucks probably isnt worth the hassle...

I work as a Diesel Mechanic, and for all my general parts, i ring around. And BNT always come back to me cheaper.

But thats just my experience/opinion.

Hi Lincoln, seeing as your simple question turned in to a bitch fest about who said what and which is cheaper and who's dick is the biggest etc, I'll try and be less arrogant and more helpful

1: Front and rear drive-shafts oil seals on the transfer-case.

I would pull both of the seals out and take them to a seal supplier such as Seaco, Farrels, Seal Imports, or some place like that close to you. They will be able to match the seal for you and it will be CHEEEEP

2:carb kit

Sit down with the yellow pages (Book, not Web) and start ringing around all of the automotive parts suppliers in your area. BNT, Repco, Apco, Parts Master, you must have some other smaller privately owned parts places local to you that advertise in the yellow pages. We do in Hamilton, and they are often a bit cheaper.

3: Right CV (I can probably rebuild it myself)

Is the CV noisy?? If so, its now part of your emergency spares kit. It is worn out. It can sometimes be cheaper to buy an entire second hand front axle, hub to hub, than to buy a single CV. If you can't be bothered with the hassle, any of the places you ring looking for a carb kit should be able to supply one that will do the job.

4:Distributor cap

Same with the other questions, ring around the local automotive parts suppliers in your area. All of those parts are available off the shelf aftermarket for a fraction of the cost of the genuine items, and the quality is fine. If your doing a Dizzy cap, do the rotor leads and plugs to

I avoid Suzuki, they are not all that good to deal with.

Just a bit of info I came across by accident, for some reason the Suzuki agents in Tauranga are about half the price of the agents in Auckland. Found that out when I was pricing up replacement rubber bushes. Might be worth giving them a call.

I've also bought a few things off "te puke partsworld" - very reasonable prices and quick shipping!

I dunno about anyone else but i've had problems with the aftermarket 36 spline CV joints from Repco. I've found that the bearing journal in them is too big but worse than that I've had one completely snap in half. I do have a front locker which loads the joints more but the genuine ones don't seem to fail in the same manner.

A new genuine one from Suzuki is around $700 as you have to buy the whole drive assembly (inner cv, outer cv and shaft 36 spline). I found second hand units much cheaper.

and thanks to kernels; I will bear the Tauranga Suzuki thing in mind.
