Ok , so my company nicely brought me a iPhone 3GS .
I have down loaded the MotionX-GPS app which seems to be the best available.
I am interested in integrating with Topo-map NZ etc for use in the truck out on the track and plotting interesting walking trials etc.
Anyone have any experience or helpful points on doing this or just info on using the GPS functionality on the iPhone.
Cheers C.

Re: iPhone GPS

I've got some new mapping software that might work for you.
Can make it work so it intergrades with google earth (plotting waypoints) but not with nz topo, only tested it on windows based pda's but it says it supports mac.

Re: iPhone GPS
UBZ, did you get your iPhone running it's GPS with Topomaps?
Try "Multiplans", it works with Topomaps after a bit of messing around tiling the maps before uploading.

This http://memory-map.com.au/products/iphone-app.html
combined with this http://www.memory-map.com/new_zealand.htm
Works as a moving map GPS, with the 1:50,000 NZ topomap stored on your iphone, which means it still works when you're out of cell coverage. (As opposed to Iphone Google Maps which requires cell data coverage).

Re: iPhone GPS
Looked at memory map even brought the full app!!! It was not compatible with the older version of memory map i have on the pc!!!!!
requiring purchase of the latest full version
Thier is also no way to make it compatible with the free LINZ 1:50 topo maps, which in my opinion are way better than the memory map maps.
I've been using motionX GPS to plot waypionts and tracks onto google maps for know.
Will definatley look Multiplans up, on the App store???

Re: iPhone GPS
Be interested to know how you get on with coverage for this.
Have you played with the GPS on the phone out of town yet??
GF's got iPhone, using 'iMap my run' worked OK round town but it lost track of where we were when we went into the bush
, we were in a valley but hills werent to steep or anything.

It's just more fun in a lada !!
Re: iPhone GPS
Havn't had any issues out of town. If the app your using requires locational services it won't work once you get out of cell reception .
I've ploted pionts in Rarotonga and all over NZ well out of cell reception with motionX Gps.
iPhone 3gps has a inbuilt gps receiver so should only drop out when you lose all satelite reception.
How ever the gps function is extremely power hungry and I would not recommend using it for long periods if not plugged in to a truck or power source

Re: iPhone GPS
Guys, try the Multiplans app. Long weekend up around Serpentine Church, Mannorburn and up over above the Nevis had me on the track (or off as the case may be) ALL the time. My 'navigator' had never been in the area before and he was arguing the route with the local "I know the way" guy ...and won everytime!
Re: iPhone GPS
There's a mobile version on the New Zealand Topo Map site http://www.topomap.co.nz. Simply point your iPhone, Android device, etc. at http://m.topomap.co.nz for the mobile optimised version
Only any good if you're in signal range though!
